Chess set aesthetics?

Sorry if this sounds like a ramble...mainly because it is! This is about the aesthetics of a physical chess set and not the beauty of the game.

I was watching an episode of Morse the other day and noted a chess set on his table next to the sofa. My first thoughts were, 1, this is the 1980s, so is he playing correspondence chess or does he have friends round for a game? We will never have the answers to this as the author never allows us to know that much about Morse, & 2. A powder blue Cardi...are you sure?

But then my second thought was, really? Morse, a man of culture, who likes Opera and real ale, would he have a Norse replacer chess set? It did not sit right for me. I personally would have him with a classic Staunton set.

This now brings me to my question (at last).

I myself favour a classic Staunton set and indeed have one next to my laptop as I play on Chess.com, it’s an affectation, I like to play on a real board.

Am I alone in this? Do you prefer a themed set or other?

.. 2 years ago ; I bought, 3, 'Staunton' style, 'plastic- weighted' sets, {from, the 'nat'l chess fed. here} ; Intending, to become a local chess- club, tutor.

.. It must've been, partly, my 'fickleness', that changed my mind ; And, I since gave, 2 sets away ; Along with selling, one of 2, 'clocks'. - Undoubtedly, the lesser, of my 'fickleness'/ indecision, mind-set, handicaps.

The 'numero uno', personal trait, related to indecision ; Referred, to Not knowing, {or having a clue} ... As to, what field-of-endeavor, to seriously pursue ; Going on, 50 years ago. ..{well, supposedly .. confessions, are good, for the soul} .. Ouch !
