Chess set Question

Hi All,

I got this chess set here at home. It has been here for a long time, no idea on the origin and materials.

The pieces feel "hard" (like not wood, but rather stone), though I'm not sure.

The board is wood.

No markings/text anywhere.

Any idea on the origin/materials? Or what would be the best way to find out about this?

Thanks,

K.

Thanks for the feedback. Looks indeed a bit like resin - I was not familiar with the material.

I would think that Ivory would be a bit heavier.

Anybody else a suggestion?

Hi
Kristof Meirlaen

Your set is made of resin. Check under the felts and you will see the curved grinder marks where the bases were smoothed. You should also see some little bubbles. The board may also be resin and probably came with the set.

If it still looks like ivory after you look try the hot needle test on the underside of a pawn.

I examined the pieces a bit more closely, and the rook has some damage where some small piece is broken off. Where it is broken, very tiny little sparkles can bee seen. Is that a characteristic of resin?

thanks chessknight80, the ANRI chess set is indeed very similar! Only the pawn pieces look different.

One piece had some loose felt, and the schreger lines (never heard of them, but the linke provided some insight) are not present, the carvings are rather parallel in shape.

So I think we can say this is a

Replica of the ANRI Monsalvat chess set in resin.

If more ideas arise, shoot!

And if anybody is interested in the board/pieces, shout out as well.

Found this one:

This looks like the same chess set then the one in my living room! Thanks all for the help!

And this one as well:

Could it be that my chess set is "crushed marble" instead of "resin"?

Even the board is there...

Stonehard or similar stone powder products are still resin based. They are in fact a bit like mortar or concrete with a matrix to hold them togeter and bulker like stone dust, albeit marble or chalk or whatever.
