I'm sure you're looking forward to playing at such an historic site as the Marshall Chess Club! Hopefully when you return home you can let us know what it was like to play there. I've never experienced the chess culture in NYC but, like you, I would think a game could be found 24 hours a day. Enjoy!
Chess Tournaments and Culture in NYC

I'm sure you're looking forward to playing at such an historic site as the Marshall Chess Club! Hopefully when you return home you can let us know what it was like to play there. Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I was considering doing some basic blogging on chess.com, so I'll definitely let everyone know about the experience.

I'm sort of surprised that there are no coffee houses that are known for being a chess gathering ground. Unfortunately, since I'll be in NYC next month, the parks will almost assuredly not have any chess to be found. Also, my understanding is that the Chess Shop has closed.

The Chess Forum on Thompson Street down the block from Washington Square Park is still open. It is the last of the 3 or 4 chess shops that I remember used to be around there @ 25 years ago. I was there last February on a Saturday afternoon, and there were at least 10 games going on in the back room.

That's very good to hear. Do you recall the names of the other chess shops? I've only come across two, and one is closed.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned a coffeehouse that is a good chess haunt. I'm also surprised that there are no other active tournament locations, aside from the Marshall Chess Club. It doesn't look like the Brooklyn Chess Club has offered any tournaments in a while, and the Queens Chess Club doesn't seem to be holding any tournaments in December.
I'll be in New York City all of December, and I'm looking to play as much chess as humanly possible while I'm there. I'm playing in all of the Marshall Chess Club tournaments (MCC Amateur, etc.) and the Empire City Open, but I'm really surprised that I couldn't find miscellaneous tournaments and games being held elsewhere, not even rapid chess.
Does anyone know of any chess that's happening in NYC that might not be listed on the USCF's tournament page? I figured there would be a bunch of smaller blitz and rapid tournaments held in smaller clubs, etc., but I haven't found any notice of them. Feel free to suggest general chess culture stuff should check out, too. I realize it will be far too cold, in all likelihood, to play chess in the park, but I'm sure there are other things to be mentioned.
