I will be going on vacation/holiday and I would like to travel... and also do something related to Chess. I was wondering if any of you have done that and if you have any suggestions regarding preparation, destinations (preferably USA Midwest), etc.

There is actually a chess cruise! You take a relaxing cruise, get lessons from GMs, and play in a mini tournament I believe!

New York City is always a good destination! See the city sights and check out the chess haunts in Greenwich Village and the parks. Allot a weekend for playing chess at the Marshall Chess Club.

Erik, Thanks! It would be really cool to play Chess on a cruise. I will google that in a little bit.

Chessbuff, playing at the Marshall Chess Club would be fun. I would have to study the Marshall Attack, just for the memories! I will shoot your a message for more details. BTW, is it true that people play for money (betting) in NY parks?! Thanks for the idea!

Definitely...they won't play you for free. It's how most of them try and make a living. It's a very fun experience though, I've done it many times. After they realize your strength, you move up the totem poll of players there, and the weaker ones wont play you any more. There are lots of very strong players there though. Last time I was in washington square park, just a month ago, there was a master playing another strong russian player for about $50/game.

chessig, if you want to play for money, i am sure you can find someone to accomodate you. however, i think betting in a public park is illegal. on the other hand, if you want to avoid playing for money, then that is not a problem as most players play for bragging rights. the three public parks that are best known for chess are bryant park on 42nd, washington square park in greenwich village ( NYU area ), and the park across where the World Trade Center used to stand in downtown Manhattan.

Jay & Chessbuff, nice info. I wouldn't mind engaging somebody in a game for money - but not if I will be arrested for it. I can play in a local tournament here and win some money. ;-) I would like to get away from work - but at the same time enjoy Chess. I assume there are people playing all day every day in the parks...

Just out of curiosity (!!!), they are all timed games, right? 5 min or 15 min or 1hr, whatever you choose. Not where you opponent would take 2 days to play!

Well, there was a cop in the park when we were playing for money, and he closed down some poker games, but didn't seem to care about the chess gambling. But nonetheless, we were pretty discreet about it just in case. And yes, all timed games, usually 5 min each, but they will give you time odds, or play longer games if you ask.

Cool. I appreciate the info!

I highly recommend Ole Chess Camp in St Olaf, MN.

GM instructors with an intensive study course.

I once played park chess players at muscle beach in cali.  Bet is Dollar a minute and x2 if mated. We used a clock. Blitz games...they hooked me with a few wins.  I bit head, line and sinkers and there goes my $$$. Lol.
