I find that actual chess played with people is much more engaging, play the person instead of the gameboard it leaves a slight disadvantage making a move and not being able to see the other persons responces, from a good chess player you can almost always tell when youve hit a nerve ending with a critical move that undoes most of their plan and forces them to reconsider, and although I like going through and systematically thinking each any every move, the repurcussions and such
