Chessbase 11 is on the way

Chessbase 11 will be available at Oct. 15th (english version) and Oct. 1st (german version).

EDIT 2: Chessbase is primarily a database system that specializes in organizing and handling chess-related data (games, positions, middlegame themes and opening fragments).

Chessbase itself is NOT an engine, so it has to use chess engines to provide the brains for the analysis/kibitzer feature. CB11 apparently will ship with Fritz 6-Engine und Crafty-Engine according to the link included to the original post.

Aside from additional data for the Megabase 2011 database, I would hate to think that the only selling point will be the access to 5 million games online.

See the Enlgish-translated version of the same link here.

There has to be something more... there are databases online that are free.  Why would someone pay have a thousand dollars for this??

It would only be US$332.57 or AUS$366.44. Wink

Aside from access to 5 million games through the application, I place the other dollar value on the latest database and a refined database management system that tend to follow the latest Microsoft Office GUI. The added bonus is the pictures for the players in the database.

However, I do not see the reason for someone who already has CB10 and Rybka 3 configured for their chess analysis workhorse. Throw in the latest/Updated game database, it should serve the serious tournament player for another year or two. Cool

I should mention that the core database manager is Chessbase's selling point. Have you tried using the systems by Convekta and MasterChess 7000?

The Convekta ChessAssistant is a database system looks like it was created for Windows 3.11 or Windows 95. Tongue out

EDIT: Convekta looks ugly and primitive, but it was the early adopter of chess training using computers that was developed by Russian masters. The instructional value of this product line still holds its weight in gold though.

Masterchess is a new product that intends to challenge Chessbase in the DB manager market AND Rybka in the chess engine market because MS7k will ship with Rybka's silent competitor, Stockfish. Surprised Check out the interface example here.

EDIT: MasterChess7000 looks like it was written in a Windows 2000 environment.

EDIT: ChessBase 11 may have the look and feel of Microsoft Office 2007 or 2010.

Actually I have been thinking of buying Chessbase. I've got Fritz12 and Aquarium (which I hate!). Is it easy to do a position search from either of these GUIs using Chessbase ?

Does Chessbase give you the games on CD or is it a program to search for them from a Chessbase server ?

Does it contain master games from the Steinitz, Lasker, Alekhine etc eras ?

Remember that CB is a database management system, so it functions differently from the challenger/analyzer interface of Aquarium and Fritz (even if it made by Chessbase). You will notice that when you use CB, searching for games by players, dates, places, openings and results  will suddenly become possible and intuitive.

CB has always been accessing games from the hard drive or the DVD (CD is too small for todays megadatabases). CB11 claims that you will be able to access 5 million games through the internet instead of a local database. Sounds like another Cloud computing project.

I figure that the older masters will be included in the database.

Here is what you get from the DVD (Chessbase Megabase 2010 edition):

Contains more than 4.5 million games from 1560 to 2009 in the highest ChessBase quality standard.
65,000 games contain commentary from top players.
ChessBase opening classification with more than 100,000 key positions.
Direct access to players, tournaments, middlegame themes, endgames.
the photo database was extended as well to contain 31,000 pictures now.

I have ChessBase 10 and I like it. The software was obviously written in the 1990s and never really updated though.

Yeah, I also don't realize what's the point of upgrading to 11th version)).

I think the selling point now is that you MUST have ChessBase 11 to be able to access an online database of games that is:

1. Constantly updated with the latest rated games anywhere in the world
2. New annotations will be added

The ultimate value for this kind of access is:

1. Beat Chess Informant in terms of getting the latest games and opening novelties of any rated player
2. Immediately use your choice of chess engine to evaluate your opponent for an upcoming match

Partner this with Rybka Cloud and you have the most efficient system of preparing for the game of chess. Cool

I think Chessbase means http://www.chesslive.de/. I like Chessbase 10!

Has anyone used ChessMaster (1000 through XI) for opening preparation? Undecided

I wouldn't call it preperation, but I learned lots of opening names with it back in 1998 :)

I remember I got excited when I found out that it contained a database with thousands of master games, maybe 300K total, which at the time I thought was a lot.  I even told the teacher at the chess club 'I have this program with three hundred thousand games!' and he said 'we have a program in the office with over a million. It's Chessbase.'

I would love to be able to afford CB.   I've been using SCID though, and I have to say that little FREE chess database rocks once you learn how to use it.  You can download Mil-base for free also (1.74 million master games) and update it weekly with current/recent master games from TWIC (also free!).

CB is no doubt the premiere database to have, but for roughly 400 bucks cheaper, I can do all the same things my buds with CB do, AND, still afford my premium membership at chess.com Wink

What will be new in Chessbase 11? I have Chessbase 10, and maby i think of upgrading it to 11, but i will check it out first, couse i dont wanna waste money, and i like really like Chessbase 10.

Any word if it will use the "new and improved" Micro$oft ribbon interface from hell?

Velid

For those who asked about classic master's games, can't you get those for free from web (chess.com has a lot of them in download section) and load them into DB?? (free or cheaper CB)

CB is preatty much standard nowdays, I have 10 and doubt that I will move to 11 any time soon (chess is just a hobby, not profession for me), but I also used SCID for long time and didn't have a lot of problems with it either.

Only Chess Assistent I tried had old interface (I believe CA 6 light) that not only looked ancient, but was very hard to use and work around. I might try it again, if they have newer version.

I read somewhere that CB11 will have a "Live GM" option for your game analysis.

Just teasing. Tongue out

I bought Chessbase Light 9 Premium (goofy name!) for 70 some dollars at the chessbase site and it is awesome!!  I don't mind being a couple versions behind and I can still access the online database.  I just purchased the Big Database to have on my computer (easier to work with that way).

I wasn't always high on chessbase but am now a convert.  There are SO many tools for study.  Real study.  (which I think SCID has as well but I have had really bad luck with a free chess software for some reason)

Just so everybody knows, Fritz 12 HAS been using the ribbon style of MS Office 2007 including the Application Menu button on the top-left side of the screen.

The biggest difference is that the Fritz ribbon is more useful compared to the MS Office 2007 ribbon.

When CB11 comes out, we can be sure that it will have the same interface setting as as Fritz 12.

Question: Is this a good or a bad thing for CB?

Musikamole

I own ChessBase Light 2009 and have access to 4.5 million games, at least that is what the add claims. I do see far more games/positions with this online database than the one here in Game Explorer.

With this new ChessBase 11, will I need to upgrade my ChessBase Light 2009 to have continued access to their online database?

I agree. ChessBase 10 or 11 sounds too expensive for what it is, but then, all ChessBase and chess products in general are too expensive.
