ChessBase 17 instability - deleting games

Can anybody help ? Since losing my hard disk and having to buy ChessBase17 I have had nothing but problems. I have a new solid state hard disk, an Intel i7 processor and 8Gb RAM. Having paid 125 euro for the digital download I was hoping to have a top class set up. I purposely bought directly from ChessBase rather than any other source, hoping to get the best service. First, days before leaving for the ECC in Albania in October, 2023, when updating the database of my own games (approximately 1600 at the time), the tab listing the Games empitied. Across the top of the screen, it advised 0 games in the database. Imagine my panic. Incredibly, both the Opponents and Tournaments tabs were still full of data. I contacted ChessBase by email and was so upset I called by mobile from Wales to Germany. The service was abysmal. I had to reload from an old back-up and re-enter the last six months of games. Having lost all my annotations, I was not best pleased.

Then, while in Albania, I encountered a problem with Save Error, as described on a previous entry here that somebody had with ChessBase 16. I would update a repertoire database game, having done some research or added to my theory after a game which varied, and the ChessBase Save Error message box would appear and refuse to save. After a period it would right itself.

Three weeks ago, I lost all the games in My Games database again. I had started to copy the database to a memory stick, as well as having an automatic back-up. The memory stick is necessary as if a problem occurs the backed up version in the cloud is also corrupted. I have reloaded the software, using one of my five downloads. I have deleted the History function at the suggestion of ChessBase. Then, I still can't believe this, the most recent 52 games all reverted to the same moves. The game details were retained and even the written annotations but the moves were all the same ! And again no help from ChessBase. I copied the unaffected games into to new databases named Hope and Safe. I re-entered the 52 games into Hope and copied them to Safe. I then annotated my most recent five games, variations and words into Hope. Today I decided to add the move times, intending to copy them into Safe. The move times wouldn't save in the first game. I would enter them after the move, try saving the game, it would appear to save but when I entered a few more and tried to save again, the softwater would hang-up, with the rotating symbol. When I shutdown and restarted, not only had the move times been lost but so had the written annotations. Only the move variations had been retained.

This evening, I decided to try putting a move time into another database. I opened my Welshbase of games on Welsh players since 1958, approximately 40,000 and tried to reorder by date then fix the sort order. All the games disappeared ! I tried to pause the back-up but it has backed-up the corrupted version....database lost.

I have emailed ChessBase again but what can I do ? If I successfully demand my money back, I still don't have a working copy of ChessBase software. I feel trapped, Adam.

I got bored by the second sentence but hello

I've never used any chessbase live service, ever, and I have online options disabled. And I have megabase 2023 as my reference database.

I've never seen a "Save error" in chessbase 17. All of my databases are saved locally to my computer.

All I can suggest is pause any back-up software and anti-virus while you are working.
