Approximately how many members does Chess.com actually have?

k-scope

It tells you this figure at the top of the log-in screen.

al_farabi

6,986,637

INDIGOADULT

I think about 5 million

grass-hopper

Okay, so part 2 of my question: (If there are 6,986,637 members)

Why is my Rank #29,783 of 310,036 and not #29,783 of 6,986,637

Tapani

Maybe only 310k actually play chess? (i.e. are rated)

So out of 6,986,637 members, only 4.4% are playing chess? I'm not so sure about that.

chessfa1

I am pretty sure that 310k is just those who played that day. That is why it is called "Today's rank. The 7 million is total amount of members. Those who played that day, that played other days, or who don't play live chess at all.

grass-hopper

Yes, I guess that makes sense..

chess.com has 6,986,637 members the number of member is always changeing

NimzoRoy

Grass_Hopper How did you determine that only online chess indicates how many members are active here? The bottom line is still a  small percentage of 7,000,000 but online chess is  not the only indicator.

Live Chess - Blitz

Current: 1549
Today's Rank: #75,467 of 1,253,252
MyRook

Today's rank represents what you rank for that day not how many players are on for that day.It also represents only online chess(correspondence). If you look at the Live chess you will see a different number of players. So some do not even play online chess they just play Live, blitz chess therefore they will not be numbered

Honestly, does it really matter?

Understood. Many thanks..

Wait ... what? Are you trolling?

So you say that all these people joining every hour, with their profile pics, played games and forum activity, are all fake?

Are you on drugs?

TheBigDecline

As a matter of fact, I can (well, only partially, since I don't know the exact number of games played each hour, but Live Chess is always packed)

All these people are fake?

And yes it absolutely matters.  I am sure in Germany you guys are used to just accepting whatever version of the truth the "authorities" tell you.  That's really caused a lot of problems for Europe over the last 100 years or so.

I for one am heartened to see more of these threads questioning that silly 7 million figure.  It shows the users here aren't just a bunch of sheeple.

That is a horrible thing to say. You have just shown how offensive and closed minded you are.

Not all of them, no.  But you were talking about played games and forum activity.  Can you providence any evidence that the people listed on the page you cited are doing any of that?

Hmm... look Frank, I'm not disputing the claim that many, many of those 7 million accounts are in fact double logins, bots, spammers etc., reducing the number of genuine accounts heavily. But you made it sound as if Chess.com is coming up with a deliberate hoax to trick its users that this place is more popular than it actually is, by making up numbers. You just made that assumption without any evidence whatsoever, and I try to make it clear to you that you're wrong on this.

And theoretically, you could proof the forum activity and played games of each one of them on their respective profile sites, ... like, click on my username and you can review my games of the last 30 days, plus everything I ever posted here. Likewise you can do so with other members. I hope that by this, I've helped a new member (Welcome, btw! Smile) to navigate through this site.
