Chessnut Air vs Millenium eONE vs DGT Pegasus

I'd love to buy an electronic chess board to play online games, and have found the above three boards. Does anyone own one, and if so what are the pros and cons of that board and would you recommend? For info I live in the UK and use iOS and a Mac to connect to both chess.com and lichess.

I have a similar dilemma.

both the e-one and DGT look very attractive.

I understand that the DGT has/has had issues with connecting to chess.com.

I understand that the issue lies with the software on the smartphone and not with the hardware per se.

like you, I use iOS and am not sure if this issue is solely with iOS or whether android users also have this issue too.

I don’t know if this issue has been fixed.

I do know that there appears to be at least two camps that ‘fight their corner’.
those that believe Millenium has the superior product and those that believe DGT does.

it seems, from the online reviews I have read, that Millennium does not have such pronounced connection issues, but who knows. I am going for DGT simply because I have their Centaur chess computer acomputer.

Good afternoon, since I have the same questions, I would like to know wether you have been able to try/play on one of these. I'am also a Mac/iPhone user and Millenium seems not to have fixed the iOS / MacOs issues (and chess.com). Today, on the one hand Chessnut seems to be THE solution for Mac users (and chess.com - to be confirmed), on the other hand DGT is expensive.....

Am I right? Any thoughts?

Did you have a look at:

Thank you for your help (and sorry for my english).

I’ve ordered a Chessnut Air. I’ll let you know what I think of it when it arrives 🙂

I tried DGT Pegasus and had to return it. Its a nice board, has a nice size, but It’s full of bugs, the app is not good and the board does not work well with White Pawn. Yesterday I received a Chessnut Air and even though I am having some small issues, it seems to function well (for now) with White Pawn in Lichess, even playing against the Maia bots.

That's good to know, thanks! I've had a couple of minor issues with the Chestnut Air too, but the developers are really responsive if you put a comment on their Facebook Group. I've been playing on an iPad on both chess.com and Lichess through the Chestnut App. I've not tried White Pawn yet, I might give it a go.

Please give some feedback on the board you purchased thanks in advance, because I want to buy one too.

I just got the eone and it's been awful, I'm returning it. Will not stay connected long enough to finish a 10min game. I constantly had to either resign or switch to the phone. Resetting it and my phone was no help either.

I had the DGT Pegasus for a week, and I couldn't finish a single match. Lost connection every single time. I returned it. I had the Millenium eOne since February 2022, and was more or less happy with it. Pity that it wouldn't work with chess.com on iOS/iPadOS, but as far as I understand that's nor Millenium's but rather chess.com's fault.

Since yesterday I have the Chessnut Air. It is in a completely different legue. Full piece recognition, very stable and reliable, works with Lichess and even chess.com on iOS/iPadOS, with their own App. Works also well with White Pawn on Lichess. On chess.com you can even play the bots! It looks good and feels good. Fast shipment. Highy recommended.

Thanks for the recommendation BathHormen. I was trying to use the eOne with Android and had the same constant dropping issues you experienced with the DGT. When I'm ready to pull the trigger again I'll be looking closely at the Chessnut.

I bought the DGT tournament board like 5 years ago for ~$1100. And it was amazing what a crappy, rinky-dink product it was. It was just a mediocre wood board with a small circuit board awkwardly shoved through a hole in the side and hanging there freely off of its wires. The instructions that came with it were totally out of date and useless. I had to download instructions off of the website (which were not a whole lot better). When it finally started working on my computer, it felt almost like a mistake; and I kept wondering if I had missed anything or done something wrong. And (at the time), it didn’t work with chess.com. So it was just a totally useless impulse buy.

@bathormen, do you know if the same functionality is available on Android?

BathHormen

@diglorious Yes, Imhave an Android device, and I can play using the Chessnut with at least these Apps:

Chessnut's own app

White Pawn

Chess Dojo (Georg Kalab)

PGN Master (Georg Kalab)

Chess for Android (Art Bik)

I can play against the bots, online on chess.com, lichess, White Pawn, and I can play from position using PGN Master, for example.

Chessnut air is quite good, it’s quite annoying that you have to log into chess.com in their app and type in your email address and password every time, but overall, it’s quite good. You don’t even have to look at the screen while playing. One small problem is that you can’t slide pieces and you must lift them and place them down or else it will only move one square. One time I did this and lost a game. The connection is good though.

Is this still an issue (anyone) in which you have to log in every time. Is that on the phone or your computer?

Are there discussions here on how to replace the pieces for the eOne eboard assuming that itnn be is possible? Thanks.

I initially owned a squareoff pro, liked the look of it but found it super buggy and ended up selling it out of frustration. Bought a Pegasus instead, the size and look were great. It doesn’t work with iOS with chess.com. The DGT app isn’t well supported and I found the pairing of games terrible. Even after selecting the game parameters, I was matched with players 500+ points higher or lower than myself. I lost so many games from it crashing or not registering that I stopped playing on the board all together. Have recently sold it and considering a squareoff air+. Hope that helps
