If you reach 2200 elo are you automatically awarded the title of CM?

CP6033

FIDE elo right?

alekspachalov99

What's the difference between Candidate master and national master if both require 2200 elo?

Coach-Bill

you have to apply to FIDE through your national federation for it. This means someone pays, and probably you.

So the candidate for the title needs to pay a fee? Is this the case for every title?

I know of a European FM who paid for his title out of his pocket. IM's and GM's, their national federation may pick up the tab, I suppose it depends on their own policies. However, someone pays. FIDE is in business to collect money. The USCF is dragging their heels on getting me the paperwork to process my CM title. Over a year later, they keep sending me to someone else in the office who will help me when I inquire.

In the CFC (Canadian Federation of Chess), "Candidate Master" is also an unofficial title used for players with a national rating between 2000 and 2200. "Unofficial," because they don't award an official tiltle that National Master is. An accepted title all the same, nationally, because within the CFC's classification system, they classify those with the 2000 to 2200 rating as Candidate Masters.

I believe the USCF does something similar with those in the same rating range, except they use the term "Expert" for it.

Its worth pointing out too, that to get the FIDE CM title, you have to have participated in enough FIDE sanctioned events to have established that rating. Many national tournaments are not sanctioned by FIDE, so the rating points earned count only toward your national rating.

FIDE tournaments are also more expensive to enter. Your entry fee has to cover both the cost your national federation charges, plus the fee they have to pay FIDE for the organization to recognize (or sanction) the event.

That may be a minor detail if you live in, or near, a major a center where FIDE events are held fairly regularly. But when you don't, the higher entry fee plus the need to get the time of to travel there, and pay the travel expenses as well as the entry fee, may mean you rarely (if ever) compete there.

Are there really people who claim the CM title?

USCF you need norms.

No norms needed for the USCF  NM title , only to hit 2200 or better uscf rating .

This is interesting . I am also qualified for the fide CM title but not willing to pay for it .  I have no idea how much the fee is either .  I know in the case of IM and GM titles the player's National federation will usually pay the fee involved but often not for lesser titles . If the player wants the title bad enough and his federation won't pay then there is the option that the player can pay the fee himself .

The fee is in Euros and was about $66. Proably lower now, the Euro has fallen.
