Whats up with the CM title? If you reach elo 2000 do you qualify for it or do you have to achieve it like a norm? share your opinions...

Peedee
I thought 2000 elo was expert by USCF standards. I think CM is a FIDE title given when you reach 2200 but haven't taken enough master level scalps to claim the FM title.

I think 2200 gives you master level

CM is a FIDE title awarded for reaching 2200:

CM is 2200 FIDE, FM is 2300 FIDE, the rating (and application fee) is sufficient for both titles.

so you choose to be a National Master or CM

Finish your studies, I think that is the best possible thing in this world to do instead of concentrating to obtain a Master title (hopefully----someday).

USCF ratings and FIDE ratings are different. Almost any rated tournament in the US is a USCF-rated tournament and your games count toward your USCF rating. FIDE-rated tournaments are rarer and tend to be the bigger events.

In theory, a 2300-FIDE and a 2200-USCF are about the same ability level. But your mileage may vary.

Actually, 2300 FIDE is stronger than 2200 USCF with few exceptions.

Haven't heard about such a theory.

KyleMayhugh

That's what I had always thought I heard. USCF = FIDE-100 (with all the caveats that go with comparing ratings across pools).

Maybe everyone's mileage varies.

Then maybe you didn't express yourself well, look at the above again.

Generally I would expect a 2200 FIDE rating to be slightly stronger than a 2200 USCF rating.

There is no logic here. Its probably true that 2200 uscf is roughly 2100 fide (some will argue that its not that much less/weaker ) . So, lets say 100 is accurate you are saying a 2200 uscf ( 2100 FIDE ) is about the same as a 2300 FIDE ?  You see nothing wrong here ?  200 points difference is a LOT .

Vyomo

Actually, it depends which country you are in. In India, the competition is so tough, 1500 FIDE indians would be 2000 in America. The competition is fierce.

Ah, okay. I was just remembering the right number (100) and applying it in the wrong direction. My bad.

are there on-line titles given?

FIDE has some now,  in the site they run, but that has only been in the past year or so.
