There are 10 levels of computer opponent over at v3. You can also play in unrated "coach" mode if you wish. Check out "Try the new Chess.com" at the bottom of any page, and good luck!
Computer is way too hard even on easiest setting?

Weird, I think there was a bug when I was playing before. I just played on Lvl 1 again and completely stomped the computer (as I should have). I swear on Lvl 1 earlier the computer was playing like a Lvl 10. There were no openings anywhere. There was an immediately noticeably difference in the CPU play when I just played another game.

I would guess it is both! I mean, I've played a handful of games against human players in 10 minute games and I am hovering around 750-800; I seem to win 50-50. Supposedly the first level of the computer is only ranked 400, so I think there was definitely a bug that was making it beat everyone. But honestly, the lessons on here look like they are a huge help. I've watched and trained a bit and it's all pretty cool.
So I am new to the site and have been playing games against the computer the past couple days. I played chess a bit as a kid, so I know the rules, but never knew much about strategy and stuff. Watched a few of the videos on openings, strategies, etc., on this site, and elsewhere, did some of the training exercises, and have now played like maybe 15-20 games or more on the easiest difficulty against the computer and have not won a single time. I have gotten trounced every game and never feel like I am ever in an advantageous position. Does the computer not make "mistakes", or how am I supposed to get better without being crazy frustrated? I understand I will lose more than I win at the beginning, but the game isn't fun if the least challenging opponent I can practice against is worlds ahead of me.
