Converting Positional Advantage to Attack

Hey all,

I've noticed that one of the biggest problems in my game has to do with building an advantage in position, but then not being able to convert it into a strong attack. It's especially an issue for me coming out of the opening, and after the first few moves of the middle-game. I'll be able to supply more information once I've finished up my first few games, and can post a game and some commentary to show some specifics, but I thought I'd start here.

In short, does anyone have any adivce as to how to go about converting a noticable positional and developmental advantage into a convincing attack? What would be some good books for a beginner-level player to get a solid foundation from? Are there any online resources (youtube videos, articles, etc) that you'd highly recommend?

Thank you in advance for all discussion!

Hi... I dont now your rating. Mine is only 1564.. But I have only played 20 games or so. And won against people around 2000. I think the first rule is patience. It takes time to converted pressure into tactic. Maybee even a blunder sometimes. Most of the time keeping the pressure will be enough. Because your opponent under pressure, for many moves, will be more likely to make mistakes.

Secondly in the opening if you can prevent your opponent from castling and get is king to safety. The rule is. Attack with all your peaces. Keep the opponent king in the center.. Move your rooks to the center files and attack! Maybee this to low rated advice for you. But I think the trick is to now your timing. Which game to hold pressure, maybee keeping it into a endgame. And when to go for the mating patterns with sacrifices etc. But Normally the mating patterns demands you have more peaces attacking than he have defending, and that hes king is exposed.

Yeah I think patience is the key here. The draw area in this is relatively big. So most of the time you have only winning oppurtunities after the opening. So patience. Keeping pressure on your opponent. Accept some draws. But be violant when the oppurtunity rises.. :-)

And study endgame maybee. Then you will easier transformed your pressure in middlegames. To pressure in endgames. get some winning strategies for endgames. Bishop against Knight. Pawns against knight etc. Many times you have to created some type of asymmetri, to get winning chances in endgames. And with the pressure and initiativ. It is likely that you are the one to decide which type of endgame it would be. :-)
