Copying moves?

GenocidalWar

most of the time when i play with begginers and even some people who have been playing for quite some time they tend to copy my exact moves. is this really practical or is it just because they arent so sure what moves to play? or even more are they just mocking me?

Anatoly_Sergievsky

That isn't practical at all for them- there are all kinds of things you can do to punish someone who does that. For example:

Of course, there are other way to mess them up; but that seems the simplest to me.

If they're copying moves blindly, you can force mate as shown below. I wouldn't try it, though, because they'll probably notice the queen hanging.

I don't think they are makeing the same moves to mock you, I guess they aren't sure what they should move.

they might notice it but if they are just going blindly than that would be a fun way to punish them

That example is not strictly true, black has d6 at the end. Ne4 is very dubious, but can be used as a crazy pawn sac.

your right he can still get the knight back

bolshevikhellraiser

i think they do it to play for a draw

bolshevikhellraiser

ive had several people who i beat repetitively aand they thought itf they copy my moves they could get a draw but it doesnt work especiallbecause white has the extra move and eventually theyre force to defend

GenocidalWar

yeah and suprisingly the best guy at a small chess club i used to be part of did the copy move ting and he played random moves yet still beat everyone but when i played him i won easily so i guess that made me the best

I have experienced this practice only once. I managed to win that quite easily because when you are moving, you definitely have a line in mind but your opponent is moving without any plans and this is where you are better than your opponent.

And I wont consider it as mocking. As I mentioned earlier, I was sure after initial 4 moves that my opponent was copying me and I wrote my first words in chat box ..............."hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm" and the reply came, "LOL". It was a fun game though.

If you can play the same moves as you opponent without casuing yourself problems, you'll have equalised most probably as black, and if you're really lucky, you might even put white into somewhat of a zugzwang. It's white's job to make sure that black can't equalise so easily.

 Thats the bottom line.

I wish that my opponent would copy my moves.  My moves are generally losing!
