Could an animal play chess?

Very interesting. Chess seems pretty abstract, but maybe something less complicated as a starter-game, and work up to some form of chess? I’ve seen television programs about some very clever birds. Macaws, parrots, and the like. I bet they could learn tic-tax-toe for instance. Any instances of animals playing games on their own for fun? This is an interesting question.

Someone taught a dog how to move chess pieces and to distinguish each piece.
Some of the intelligent birds are definitely able to "learn" the moves but we have no way to communicate with them, which is a problem with any abstract learning.

Thing is there are much simpler games than chess and I'm not aware of any animal that has been successfully taught one of them. I think someone has shown crows are able to play tic-tac-toe.
Funnily enough if apes were able to play chess or something similar, they might be scarily good in some aspects of it, bullet maybe. Realistically only checkers would seem doable at the moment.
