'According' is the wrong word to use in this context. And don't get me started on your unnecessary use of punctuation.

That said, sir, the United States of America is a pretty awesome place.

oh, oh, sorry ColonelKite!! i guess the overuse of a comma and that "according to" can't even compete with: "chess are most popular", "how many % ", "Russia and Ukraine comes"!! nooo, sir, because the USA IS a pretty awesome place!

Mate, it's ok...you defend your country and I have nothing against the US but don't be a pinnhead just for the sake of finding mistakes!

@pulix ... the OP is a kid, okay? So it's sort of ridiculous you go about calling him illiterate when you yourself aren't too sure of grammar. That, mate, is the irony. And "pinnhead"?

too sure of grammar? get a life mate! who knew he's a kid? plus, let's not go into comparing our grammar level...but I guess you're the type of a guy who finds mistakes even in his own stool!

and yeah..pinnhead..maybe you got a BBC link with that too!

So I guess we can quantify how popular the game is by how many GMs but it's much harder to decide how much respect for players exist.  I think the former Soviet nations probably win this category though.  Or at least rank very highly.

ColonelKnight

"Finding mistakes in stool" ... is that a thing in the glorious nation of Laos?

The new members this month are an argumentative crowd.

He who lives in a glass house shouldn't throw rocks...unless he has a machine gun turret on the roof designed specifically to target incoming rocks. Then he who lives in a glass house can throw rocks at whomever he pleases. I really hope this pulix guy is joking... but I have a feeling that he isn't.

ColonelKnight

Nah, he's not kidding. These people from their speck-on-the-map countries love to trash-talk about the US even as the whole village goes about assembling iphones.

He's not joking.  He wants to hijack this thread and turn it into a grammar lesson.  He's not from Laos, but he is too much of a coward to reveal where he is really from.

Philippines...
despite of lack of "Financial support/capabilities" to join in different tournament around the world, there are so many Filipinos Chess Enthusiasts here.... Not mentioning Wesley So, Eugene Torre, Joey Antonio, Mark Paragua etc....

Is it more popular there than pool?

ChuckECheese

Monaco is surprisingly at #2.

And wasn't the Philippines the site of a previous World Championship match?  Could that be why chess is popular there?

why should I be a coward? I never said i don't want to reveal where I'm from! I'm Australian from the town of Mackay, Queensland!satisfied?

now, where's ColonelKnight to say again that you're just a child??

This being said, i repeat that I have nothing against the US or it's people, but I couldn't help it. I had to say something when I saw your mistakes.

Thanks, guys, for your nice, helpful, and relevant comments!

Hi, Chuckieman, have a look in the forum, here on chess.com, called " GM-s per capita, 1. Iceland ! " in which I wrote post number seven, some six weeks ago !     That answers your question I think !    Regards, Ger.

P. S. If important and/or necessary, transmit that post to this thread !

Benedictine

I think the table is suggestive but only really shows how many GMs. How about of the general population? Which country has the most people playing chess as a percentage of its population? I would have thought this had to be in a country where is part of the school curriculum. Someone suggested this is the case of Russia and I think Georgia does as well.
