I am trying to upgrade as a gold member. I used Visa and then Master debit cards. But , I don't know why they are not supported. Now, I am unable to become a member due to no fault of mine! N.Arulkumar. Kumbakonam. Tamil Nadu.India.612 001.

Write an email to support directly. They will find a way to help you out.

If you can pay with paypal, pay directly to order@chess.com.  Include your username and what membership package you're buying.  The billing department will manually add the membership on :)

I can't pay with PayPal. I have sent a query to support. I hope my problem will be solved soon!

LadyWolf

Great, the billing department will get it and will be able to take care of you :)

I believe that, technically, "debit" is the wrong term here.

I've implemented IPG (internet payment gateways) myself before. From my training and experirence I can tell you that "debit" isn't something that's supported on international sites as opposed to more national offers.

But, why is that so? In order to debit your bank account, the creditor needs a mandate/allowance to do so. Usually this needs some kind of authentication process of the sort: creditor sends you form, you sign it, creditor brings it to the bank (at least with SEPA is that so). On an international site this is all but practical.

Credit cards are much easier to implement due to there being only a handful of them. And here's where PayPal comes in play if you don't have a CC (credit card).

PayPal has mandates with pretty much any bank, world-wide, except for few countries. You can add your bank account to your PayPal account after proving it is yours by confirming 2 random transfers they made to your bank account (at least, couple of years ago that's how it was implemented). Upon buying something online (technical term is "sale" transaction) PayPal has the ability and permission to debit your bank account directly.

Also, imagine, if anyone in a random country could just charge "debit sale" your bank account. That would be chaotical! There's no security in place, all that it needs is knowing your bank account #.

With CCs there's at least the card security code. Which, is *NOT* the same thing as your debit cards PIN you use to grab bills from an ATM.

I think most people confuse credit cards and debit cards. They are not the same!

Tigerprowl5, are you talking about chess.com?! Because, clearly, they only accept CCs and PayPal or are you talking about a national online store you purchased something from? :)

India probably has infrastructural problems or your technology do not support modern billing payment.

I use my debit card to upgrade. It works.

If the payment system doesn't allow it, you may not be able to. You could try logging out and then gifting it to yourself.
