Most openings have a line of play which is deemed to contain nearest to correct play by both sides. Typically, the main lines have been explored in hundreds if not thousands of master games.
In the Ruy Lopez, 2..Nc6 is a main line played in over 110,000 master games in the Game Explorer database. 2..f6 is a side line played in only 10 games.
