Denker Tournament of High School Champions?

I won my state's High School Championship tounrament last weekend, coming in clear first with 5.5/6. I believe this qualifies me to play in the Denker, but I've heard very little about this tounrament. Does anyone really know anything about it? I'm not sure who I have to get in contact with, etc.

Here's the official site for the Denker: http://www.denkerchess.com/

I would think more people would know more about a tounrament like this!

All I know is that one representative from each state is chosen to attend this tournament, generally through a championship tournament. My main goal this year was actually to win my State Championship and represent my state there, but sadly I screwed up an exchange in my first game of the Championship and lost my chance.

I'm not sure if your state organization sponsors your trip at all, so I'm not sure how you're going to deal with travel. If you win the tournament, you also get a full ride to the University of Texas - Dallas, so there's that.

I'm also sure you could contact the people running the tournament about anymore specific questions.

Other than that, congratulations on qualifying! You're going to get to play some very strong players, so best of luck!

I am going to Denker. While I agree that several strong players cannot participate, I will say that the idea of Denker is really meant to sound good on paper by sending the state champ from every state, and to crown a "champion of champions."

This will be my first time at Denker (and only - I'm a senior), so I'm not really sure how it all works. I understand the format of the tounrament, but I don't know who to contact to confirm my place there, or anything like that. All I know is that I won my state's high school championship tounrament, and the tounrament director mentioned something about the Denker. I tried e-mailing the Co-Chair of the tournament, Jon Haskel, but he hasn't replied yet.

I also pulled off somewhat of an upset in my state's High School Championship, taking clear first as a sub-expert player while some experts finished half a point behind me. The State couldn't/wouldn't overrule the tounrament results and send a stronger player to Denker, would they?

Just emailed my state's scholastic chess association - I suppose they're the ones that have to nominate me?

Maybe this is a bit early in the year...there doesn't seem to be much activity when it comes to the Denker yet. Do they start thinking more about it in July/August?

Your state's scholastic chess association is the way to go. They decide the representative. Contact Dewain Barber AmChessEq@aol.com, if you have any questions. He is the long time organizer of the event and his advice is always good. If you go, have fun.

I thought Barber organized the K-8 tounrament
