Difference between blitz and rapid

Hello everyone and thank you for reaching my topic. Today i wanted to ask why is there so big of a difference between my rapid and blitz ELO. For those of you who dont know i am 15 years old and at this time (12 April 2021) i've been playing chess for about 11 months. I play 30 minutes matches most often , and occasionally i play 10 minutes matches. My rapid ELO right now is 1950 but my Blitz rating is 1400. I suppose the reason behind this difference is that i dont's take speed chess seriously and usually when i play it is late in the knight and i just play for fun. So i would appreciate it if the more experienced players than me could help me and answer this question!!! Thank you very much and have a great day happy.png

Same thing is happening to almost everyone including myself. My theory is that most new people play rapid games which is 10 minutes or more. So they inflate the rapid ratings to make people feel good about their chess ability and this could cause people to keep playing and possibly buy a membership.

Ι dont really think that's the case. In rapid you get a lot of time to think and make the right decisions while in blitz you get paniced and lose your mind this is what happens to me

Remember that some players are able to shortlist moves quickly in games. These players exploit the fact that players playing longer time controls usually struggle when faced with smaller time controls.

It's like suddenly sitting for a 2-hour exam when you have only been practising on homework under no time pressure.

rapid is 10 minute rated and blitz is 5 minute rated

I'm pretty certain that ever since 10-minute chess was classified as rapid (previously blitz), a larger proportion of players who previously specialised in 10-minute blitz games would attain high rapid ratings as a result.

i think before 10 minutes was blitz and most of the poeple then who playde blitz played 10 minute blitz. and when it got converted to rapid people played rapid i guess to play 10 min. this made more people play rapiid and inflated the ratings. whilst when the people who played 10 min (blitz) played normal blitz they werent as good at it because they had to rush moves making rating deflate

When you are so obsessed with chess you spell “knight” instead of “night” but to answer your question (this is only my opinion) time control is probably a big and obvious reason hope you read this happy.png

5/5 blitz can work out to be a 7 minute game so it's not the crazy time pressure. At least I don't think so.

i play only 1-3 min games now. i take speed chess very seriously and I do not play rapid.i am 8 by the way

kinkajouthedragon

easy to be 2000 in bullet . game after game

well good luck with that

expert Im not, but I've been playing chess for many years.

bliz is one of the modes, I prefer them because after half an hour in front of the chessboard I tend to fall asleep, but they help a lot in evaluations because when you play bliz you can't go away from the table (you would lose).
so, since you have a good standard score, I suggest you train in bliz and go for a good score, 1400 elo is too little (1700 elo would be enough) or the ill-thinkers may suspect that you have obtained your score using a PDA.

My Rapid rating was around 1550-1600 immediately prior to 10 min games being classed as Rapid. At that time, my blitz rating was 1700. I got the sudden jump to 1700 and when I started playing 10+0, my rating quickly rose to 1900+

I guess the rapid pool has some inflation in there.

Average rapid rating on the site is 838.92.
Average blitz rating on the site is 845.95.

So the theory of purposely inflating rating is a bit wrong. By the way, check this out:

Various rating comparisons

You will see that up to a certain point an average person will have a higher rapid rating compared to a blitz rating, but after that point an average person will have a higher blitz rating compared to his rapid rating.

In any case, it is individual thing. I've seen relatively higher rated bullet players who are a lot weaker in blitz and rapid, even though they play sufficient blitz and rapid games. For instance I've seen someone today (on some topic whose bullet rating is 1700+, and his rapid is around 1 300 even though he played a couple of hundred rapid games). Some people are just better in speed chess, some people are better in slower time controls.

On lower levels it is somewhat more common to have somewhat higher rapid than blitz rating.

the 15 minutes? yes in fact I tend to fall asleep. are they still considered bliz?

ChessIsNotCheckerss

I feel more rushed in blitz because there is less time so I sometimes blunder my pieces in blitz.

abbinignanti

in fact yes, nklristck. I remember that on this site I had elo 2020 (libbic nick) at 15 minutes and elo 1900/2000 at 3 minutes (nick Castore).
like all beginners much better if you slow down.
