You're allowed to use certain reference materials when playing Turn-Based Chess - see site-playing-rules-a-guide-for-the-perplexed.

A number of different names have been proposed for the two formats - refer to these discussions ...

thanks for all your answers, but does this mean that live chess and online chess can be played through online via chess.com?

Indeed so.

PLAY -> Online Chess.     ...  Start New Game.

PLAY -> Live Chess.     PLAY LIVE CHESS.

what i meant is , do you need to log in via chess.com for you to play online or live chess. Cause I noticed that when you are playing live chess, you are not necesarily logging in, is that correct?

You can play Online and Live from a mobile phone. When you do that, the online indicator doesn't work - so it appears that you haven't logged in.

so you mean, that if you are playing through phone , others cant see on the web that you are online , but if you are playing via the internet, then others can see you as online. is that correct, thanks for your help.

actually, im am not rally playing chess.  But my bf does, and I am always checking what he does, and I got confused , cause sometimes I see he is online  via the green signal indicator, thus , I know that he is playing online. And then I see the red signal indicator under llive chess, so this confuses me. I dont know whther he is playing or not cause , if he is online the computer cause I am chatting him via yahoo but not responding. Thanks

The green indicator just shows that he is logged in to chess.com (via a PC). He may not actually be playing chess, and the chess.com window may be minimised on his PC.

You can trust the red indicator a lot more - provided he is playing a game with short time controls.

So you mean that if it is red , he is online and indeed playing, cuase right now , i am seeing him with the red signal but he is not responding on my chats, cant call him thoiugh cause he is in manila and im in the US. But when I checked his plays archive m it is not showing any actvity using the red signal, but whn its green , i am seeing that he is really palying cause the archives keeps on progressing.

If he's in the middle of a fast game, he may not have time to respond to your chat - or it may be too distracting. (I'm guessing here - since I don't play Live Chess myself.)

Which instant messaging system are you using? Have you started to learn chess so that you will have more interests in common with your bf?

This one.

I've also thought about this question and I have a theory that, if you play honestly online, then online chess can reflect your true chess potential because you're not seeing the other oponent, so you are trying to make th ebest move that you can think of. Whereas ones OTB games is hugely affected by forming an idea or assumption of the person you're playing against. For example if the opponent is very young you mightly try something more risky or if the opponent looks clever, you might play cautious. With online games there is less assumptions.
