NO...you canot become a GM. Grand Master is a title. You cannot become a title, you can earn a title.
Do I have a chance and/or potential to become GM ?

Grandmaster is not a legitimate goal. Master is a legitimate goal.
And to be honest, I'm really getting a bit sick of all you wannabe GMs, none of whom are ever going to come close.
Am I being too harsh with this reality check towards a teenager? I don't think so. I wasn't so arrogant at that age.
You can be anything you want to be if you put your mind to it! If you focus on being a GM then I believe you will be one. Who knows, maybe we will play each other in twenty years time in a match for world champion. Good luck on your journey dude.

Well this forum has seen something like one potential wannabe GM a day. Chess.com could be producing 365 in the next year...

When I was your age the pull of exams meant less time for chess study and tournaments.
It is not so much that the early teens have reached GM ranking but whether you have the capacity to leap in strength.
The average person rapidly reaches their talent ceiling and then cannot lift their game.

Why does everybody want to be a grandmaster...that is silly..be careful what you wish for ...it just might happen

My advice is slightly different. Unless the person is a GM already then they are not qualified to answer your question.
As a father i would say go for it. You'll never know what you can do in life unless you try it.

Thanks for your replies,
I wouldn't call someone arrogant who's possibly stronger than you. This is not the site I play on, those two matches were with a friend. I started playing chess when I was 6, but I quit, which is one of the main reasons I'm not stronger. If you want I can show you one of my games?

I agree with you. This was a game I played online against decent opponent. Now if you could prove your philosophy in my next game:
Thanks

I wouldn't say aspiring to be a GM when all odds are against them is disrespecting the title. But that is just my opinion. We all have dreams. Some dreams that people have are more attainable than others, but I do not see these said dreams as in any violation to the sanctity of the title of GM...
It's just the way it is. Someone figures out they like chess at a late age, and they start to dream. I think its normal, albeit, misguided behavior. Nothing to get insulted about though. Like I wouldn't see why a GM would be insulted if Joe smoe at age 35 wanted to be a GM someday. Rather, I would think Joe Smoe would be doing him service, seeing how he would be directly communicating that his title is to be desired.
Oh hum. Anyway, what I really wanted to say was this:
Don't post this stuff in the forums dude. You are not going to get an accurate answer. Instead, post, how can I increase my rating by 100 points, and show like 4 or 5 of your games. Since you are only a Provisional player in OTB I would suggest you wait on that until you have an established rating, and just play games and do tactics and whatever else you are doing.
Although I don't know anything about the competive aspect of OTB tournament play I do know a lot about how this kind of stuff goes, where you post, "Can I be a GM?" "Do I have what it takes?"
The real answer is this. No one knows. You are seeking validation because of a lack in confidence. You need to fix this before you can become a GM. They say not to judge others. That is true, but also, don't judge yourself! Instead, live in the moment. Don't care about anyone saying your not good enough. Don't care what other people think. Just do, and do not judge yourself, but rather, just play chess, or what ever endeavor you choose to hone. This works on anything. The only person, that can possibly make you into a GM, is yourself, and if possible with the help of a coach. Urk can't make you into a GM, neither can I. No one, but you. So why bother asking us?
On a side note, you might try to ask IM David Pruess at what age did he become Master. I know he started chess late (Age 12). It might give you a frame of reference. If you have guts you might ask him what stopped him from getting the GM title
That to me is probably the best chance you have for an answer. He is a staff member on chess.com, and from what I know likes to answer the comments to his videos. You might add this as a sort of off topic in one of his beginner videos, he might see it and answer. He does that a lot. Best of luck!

Of course you have a chance and potential to become a grandmaster. You already play chess, so there is potential. And there are only 7 billion people in the world, about 1500 of which are grandmasters. So the chances are about 5 million to one. Not great odds, but like the lottery, there are things you can do to help your chances.
@IfPatriotGames that probability is somewhat wrong, because you are taking into account people that dont play chess. The probability should only consider people thst plays chess. I guess the question would be "if I play chess, whats the probability that I'll become a GM?". And my answer would be
This is ten percent luck
Twenty percent skill
Fifteen percent concentrated power of will
Five percent pleasure
Fifty percent pain
And a hundred percent reason to remember the name.
I can answer the OP's question with complete confidence: I don't know, and neither does anyone else in this forum! In fact, there is no way to predict how far you will advance in chess. Talent, and getting an early start are important, of course, but the single most important question is: Will you continue to love chess and to want to keep working hard at it year after year? And there is no possible way to predict that now.
The only way to find out is to play in tournaments, see if you enjoy it, and see if your rating continues to go up. To get good, you are going to suffer a lot of painful defeats. Are you up for that? The pandemic is ending, OTB tournaments will be starting soon. Get out there and find out!
My FIDE rating is 1700 (provisional) and I'm going to turn 15 in couple of months. My dream is to become professional chess player, although that is very unlikely. I would consider my strength to be around 2000-2100 based on games that i played. I play in 5-7 OTB tournaments per year. I study 2-4h per day, I would love to think that I have a chance, but when i see prodigies and kids that are GMs at my age, I doubt my chance. As chess.com is one of the most popular chess related site, I would like to ask for your opinion.
