Do people from India tend to be better at Chess?

Now, I’m not generalizing here. Not everyone from India is good at Chess and not everyone who is good at Chess is from India.

That being said, I have played more people from India than any other country, except perhaps the United States. Please note that I am not going out of my way to play people from India. Nor are most of the Indian players GMs or even FMs.

I know that Chess has deep roots in India, so maybe that is why there are so many Indian Chess players. Please post your thoughts below.

India has a population of 1,380,000,000 people or 1 billion and 50 million more than the U.S..

More people  equals more chess players.

You could try some unpopular websites if you want to avoid india and usa.

@Deuri

Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against Indian or American players.  I was just curious to see why so many people from India played Chess.  I enjoy playing against anyone, regardless of nationality.

Game_of_Pawns

As said above, India has a huge population. India and China combined contain over a third of the world's population.

India are pretty huge on cricket and chess. Two games that I personally love very much.

Chess is big over there and there are a lot of people living there. Simple really, to be honest with you.

They were asking do ppl from india tend to be better at chess

Game_of_Pawns

I don't know about that. If you read the full post, as well as looking at his rating. I don't think that's what he's really asking.

@Game_of_Pawns

@happypi314 is correct.  I am asking if people from India are better.  Sorry for any confusion.  At 87, you’ll find that your once great ability to express your thoughts clearly is somewhat diminished.

On a separate note, what does my rating have to do with this post?

I like how careful you're being with your post.

And with good reason too.

Thank you, @JackRoach! Do you happen to have an opinion on this matter?

Well, I think your post is kinda contradictory. You ask if Indian chess players are better, but then the OP asks about the amount of chess players, so could you make that clearer?

Whenever I see Indian guy profile picture with Indian flag, I know it’s going to be a tough fight lol

@JackRoach

Sorry...guess I veered off track a little in the OP. I am asking if people from India tend to be better at Chess.
Bumvinnik

No India is not generally better at chess. Chess skill is not based on nationality or race or gender. India just had a world champion and it was their only world champion. He lost his title in 2013 so it's reasonable to see a huge increase in chess players from India leading up to his world championship win (Anand) and even after he lost. If Australia had a world champion you would see a huge increase in Australian chess players too. The American influx after 1972 and Fischer is from that TV show 'Thr Queen's Gambit' and Covid lockdowns.

JackRoach

I don't really know.

I think I've seen Indian players are better as well. Or at least they're harder to beat than Americans.

@B1ZMARK

I am sorry, but I must disagree with this claim. As I said in the OP, not everyone who is good at Chess is from India, and not everyone from India is good at Chess. I would appreciate it greatly if you expanded upon your opinion.

Thank you for responding in a kind and respectful way. I appreciate your opinion.

I don't think they actually mean they know it'll be a long fight.

More like they expect one, because that's their experience. I wouldn't analyze comments so deeply.
