Do we play better chess in a cool temperature?

When I get too warm all I want to do is sleep, I feel exhausted on hot days.  I can't concentrate so well and long for evening when it's cooler.  What could be the reason why a cool room temperature enables us to play a more focused and intelligent game?  Do others experience their chess improving in a cool termperature, or do you find you play better in a warm room?

Maybe? If it's cold, I drink. When I play chess while drinking I think I'm playing well, even if I lose. Therefore I play better when I'm cold!

.....some like it hot.....lol...Laughing

it shouldn't be too cold

“When temperatures were low (68 degrees or 20 degrees Celsius) employees made 44% more mistakes than at optimal room temperature (77 degrees or 25 degrees Celsius).”

but I don't think temperature may get higher than that.

I have read that The World Health Organization recommend 21C for optimum health and productivity.  That is the temperature that I personally function best at.  Several articles also recommend this as the best temperature to perform in any area at our personal best.  If we can't provide ourselves with this ideal temperature the only options would be to stand in a cold shower until our body temp lowers...  then rush to the computer play out our games and then go back to being hot. I am being facetious here of course but it's a very delicate and tricky thing to try to provide ourselves with the exact ideal conditions to perform to our best ability on any given occasion.

20C sounds normal. Usually i have 18C in winter and wind is blowing a bit from my window. It's chilly and since i have a problem with blood circulation that it's a problem for me to move a computer mouse well and i lose more this time.

clothing,  it,s a good idea to adjust what your wearing based on hot or cold.    Smile Always bring A jacket in the Summer to chess tournaments, it might be hot outside but playing next to A air conditioning vent can be freezing even if its 100 degrees outside.

Do not forget, OP is in New Zealand and it must be somewhere near the top of the summer. :)

I totally agree with you Steve, I was once in a theatre and my seat was directly across from an air conditioning unit and I was so cold, I can't remember anything about the play at all, I just sat and froze right through it!

comfort and chess do not work well for me i do prefer to be uncomfortable /cold or hungry,

this serves to keep me hunting to not be relaxed

Yes, you usually find yourself forced to wear a jacket in the summer and a T-shirt in the winter when you are indoors!

Yes, I prefer to play while it's cool. It's winter here but I only wear a T-shirt.

It's suggested that people who live in a cool climate are more intelligent, not exactly sure what the dynamics are behind this thinking but I have heard it over and over again.  It does have a ring of truth though as heat makes us sleepy while being cold makes us sharp and alert.

I don't know your situation but have you considered changing the windows.

@Ellie: I'll think about it after taking a nap.

Paella and Sangria are well known

balconing (uncountable)

  1. Go from room to other room through the balcony.
  2. Jumping from a balcony towards a swimming pool.
