Do You Play Better Over The Board Or Virtually?
I feel that I need to see a true 3d board and my opponent to win. I miss so much more online than over the board.

I don't know whether or not I play "better" otb or virtual. But if its long time controls then I'd choose otb since I cannot focus on a screen.

I play better classical chess otb for sure. When I play classical time controls online I seem to just play worse, and am also suspicious of cheaters. Blitz games I think I play better online though.

One of my friends refuses to play online, saying that he "sucks" at online chess and will only play people if there is a tangible board available. I thought this preference was a bit odd considering that chess is a game played on a two-dimensional plane, so the added third dimension (height) really should have nothing to do with making him play better. But the evidence is there: I always beat him in online chess, whereas on the physical board, he is more likely to beat me. I'm much more used to playing online, so when I play on a physical board, the height of the pieces actually obstructs potential lines for me sometimes and I find myself less likely to see tactics!
Also, recently, my uncle bragged about being the best chess player in the family, so when I challenged him to a game on a chess app, he immediately declined, using a similar excuse about how he "can't do" digital chess.
Does it just boil down to which medium of play you have more experience with? Do any of you guys have a preference with on-the-board vs digital?
I find It much easier to play over the board rather than online. In real life games I can tell more of what it going on in the game. 3D Pieces Do not help at all, in fact they make me play bad.

The chess I play is almost exclusively on line, it's how I'm used to playing chess. OTB or on line it's the same game, it should make little difference. However, most people seem to play better with the one they're used to.

OTB definitely. I have always resisted online chess but joined a few weeks ago because I was missing playing. Initially, it felt a bit like trying to play with a Lewis set and I was missing tactics even as simple as missing a fork.
To start with, I still set up a 'real' board but found it too much of a faff. Online chess is improving steadily but I find it far less satisfying than over-the-board and can't seem to take it as seriously.

Virtual chess makes it easier to see the position and visualize geometrically without first person perspective, but on the board feels more natural and you can physically see where pieces can go. Just a preference thing I imagine.

You’re not in control otb the same way you are online. Firstly, you can’t get a game at the click of a finger whether it’s casual or graded but instead you have to wait until it’s ‘your turn’. Secondly, you are facing your opponent in the flesh and blood which is hard to just simply ignore and that comes with its own pressures which obviously is never a factor online. Lastly, you’re dealing with a chunky 3D board with no sound effects and requires you to pick up and move the pieces around the board spatially. It may be the same game but the experience is totally foreign from one another and you can not just translate one into the other without an equal’ish amount of experience in both which takes years.
Definitely better online I play a friend otb he's not that good rated around 1300 on chess .com but I make a lot of.mistakes and he's able to beat me where as online I see the lines better and I play a completely different game he can barely get past 9 moves with me before it's all over I'm rated at 1689 explain that too me lmao
