Do you prefer playing as white or black? Why?

I prefer playing as black so that I can use my Petroff and QGD: Orthodox Defense!

wackwow

i prefer black too Cool

I prefer white because I've never actually chosen a black defense to 1.e4 or 1.d4.   I play/toy with the center counter, french, and semi-slav but I've never actually booked up on any of them.  I just try to reach a playable position in the middlegame and go from there.

White, stats are better. I like playing e4 as well, find d4 d5 games boring, but can't be bothered learning d4 theory so just go QGD with simple plans.

ChessinBlackandWhite

prefer black becuase I feel like I control the game more with e6

SmyslovFan

I like my repertoire as Black, but given the choice, I'll always prefer white. I like having the advantage of the first move.

Pashakviolino

White. However I usually feel uncomfortable if black plays the Sicilian defense.

TheBigDecline

I go with White, because it always feels so thrilling to open up the game as whatever you desire. Usually as black, I feel hindered in my initiative for the first five, six moves, always being forced to react to what my opponent is playing. But it's almost surely a psychological problem ...

I don't find the better stats for White Scottrf   refers to as being all that meaningful for most of us amateurs. In fact I strongly suspect a lot of times we're better off as Black playing a defense we know vs someone who is clueless (or not so familar with our defense) as White.

Still, I prefer White when facing opponents about = to myself or better than I am, and don't mind Black vs weaker opponents. In general though I would not want to play White all the time regardless of my opponents strength, even if I had the option to do so.

Scottrf

Well my stats are better as white whatever you find meaningful.

Saint_Anne

As white, I have a greater opportunity to get the kind of game I like.

AuraLancer

White. Most of my opening repertoire lies there. :)

You should feel uncomfortable if black plays the Sicilian because you have a lost game, especially if it's the Najdorf variation.

I don't want to be on the white side of the Najdorf so my first move with white is always N-KB3.

"Do you prefer playing as white or black?"

It doesn't matter but if my opponent let's me play the black side of the Najdorf I'm very happy about it.

Please use algebraic notation.

According to my stats when I was a premium member on my previous account, I do a little better as black.

I think I like Black more because I know what my opponent is doing.

"I don't want to be on the white side of the Najdorf so my first move with white is always N-KB3."

That seems a touch extreme, given all the other edges you forgo with 1. Nf3 instead of e4. Why not keep 1. e4 and learn the Closed Sicilan, or go with another variation that takes Black out of the Najdorf... something like 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. Bb5?

fwiw I used to prefer black as I'm something of a counterpuncher, and it's easier to learn playable lines as Black, but the more I played the more I enjoyed having the edge that comes with playing the White pieces.

The only reason why i prefer White is ....... the Initiative. Real simple chess term. Move first and have the opportunity to attack first. The only reason to prefer Black is to disrupt plans nothing more nothing less. If you like Black you like the Chaos you can impose on your opponents plans.

zborg

Black usually gets to choose the opening system.  Playing something you know well and your opponent doesn't is typically easier than playing white, starting out with 1) e4 or the Queen's Gambit, and allowing black to choose the opening system.

Everything else is just personal taste.

But why even care?  You must to play both sides, regardless.  So just get on with it.

jclheriteau

Interesting post: I thought people prefered white.

I believe black has more influence on the opening choice than white.

I like both.

SmyslovFan

If you really prefer black, you can play openings that give up the tempo as white.

But just about none of the people here who profess to prefer Black actually do that... intentionally at least.

Eugeneius

To be good at chess, you should be able to play both sides well.
