Do you think chess is a form of gambling?

Does it make a person lose sense of his rational reasoning, due to urge of his ego ?

First question: not really. Second question: yes

1) no, you can do something wrong and don't notice, then think that the opponent was "lucky", but it was avoidable. 2) unfortunately yes, people tend to think being good at chess means smartness, so they feel dumb for not being good. but they should have in mind that GMs and strong players aren't just smart, they put a lot of effort on their game, otherwise, they could be even worst than us.

Depends on your definition of gambling. Are you wagering money on the game? Then yes, absolutely - unless you’re 100% sure of victory. Other than that, it’s just a matter of how much you value your time and what you get out of the game.

i don't think it' gambling

Yes, no- it's not really real gambling, but if you think about it, you are gambling your rating on the chance of winning the game.

Chess is a mental test. People bet on it.

What do they bet?

Pride doesn't count.

Think in the classical definition. Betting is betting real money.

As in literally "betting the farm".

Why doesn't pride count? Some people play chess so that they can believe that they are good at something.

hp123_e

That is a complete sentence. 'Why doesn't pride count?' Also why do I have to write a complete sentence its not like you are my teacher or anything.

hp123_e

If you think that is not a full sentence when I clearly quoted your words so that there is context. 'Why' by it self could be a million things, but 'Why doesn't pride count' has a sentence following it. If that doesn't classify as a full sentence, why does your sentence,

'What do they bet?' Classify? 'What' could also be a million different things.

hp123_e

You were talking about 'betting' when I quoted you. 'Gambling' is different.

hp123_e

Yes, and Why implied a could have been the same thing.

hp123_e

Pride is an emotion- it is like a mental trophy. Some pride is more important than money.

Yes but we were talking about betting not gambling.

The Holy Quran once suggested that Chess was a form of gambling, but back when it was being written, chess was played with dice. Some think this is why chess was reconstructed into a new game where the players make decisions on where to move instead of leaving it to random chance, like gambling. In Islam, any activity that brings your attention away from your thoughts on the Creator is to be avoided, moderation is the key.

For me on chess.com it's a yes, because your basically gambling elo to see if you get elo or lose elo or none
