Do your friends play chess?

I don't know anybody irl that plays chess on a regular basis. I used to play when I was a kid, only started playing somewhat seriously since the beginning of this year. But I don't have anyone irl to play with. I think it's really strange. It such an awesome game, but it seems like it's not very popular anymore, videogames and poker on the other hand.....

They better not!

You can't find anyone in the Netherlands to play chess?! Maybe Jan Timman is desperate for a game then.

AndyClifton

Not without actively looking for someone no.

AndyClifton

Well, having to actively look would be an outrageous imposition. Smile

I started playing Chess pretty late (when I was 24 years old) and over the years I have also had the same problem of not being able to find people to play Chess with me.  Most of the people that I know do not want to play Chess and even seem to be turned off at the very thought of even being taught the game.

I have been trying to coax my son into playing Chess, but he is not interested.  I will not force him, hopefully he will come around.

Luckily, I have recently found out that one of my Poker playing buddies is very interested in learning the game of Chess.  We have started meeting about once or twice per week at my home and we have been playing mostly speed chess (blitz?).  Because he is still learning, I usually give him more time, Example;( 20 minutes for him and 10 minutes for me.) I will also let him know whenever I see that I made a critical mistake (But I will not point out exactly what that mistake is), and usually he will find that mistake after I alert him.  It seems to be helping him become a stronger player thus far.

You might want to consider 'just asking' all of your peers that you encounter on a daily basis, (even at work).  With a little luck you should eventually be able to find someone who wants to play/learn Chess.

~Good Luck~ :)

This sounds all sucky. Do you guys live in small towns?

nirvanak

There is a club where I live which runs in 5 places across the Black Country (near Birmingham, England) which I hear has quite a few members but I play at a place called Base 25 which is a youth hang out thing and quite a few people including staff play there.

The nearest club around where I live is 30 minute drive and draws 3 boards on average. In my town there is no club at all and no one to play anymore, also to play any kind of tournament its at least an hour drive. All indications it seems chess is really not as popular as it was in the 70s and 80s in the US anyway.

CHESS IS CERTANLY MORE POPULAR HOWEVER THE GAME AND MOST PLAYERS HAVE ADVANCED TO THE NEXT SEQUENCE-----PLAYING ON LINE

I find I'm able to get a game going at a coffee shop, if you find one that'll let you camp out for a while at a non-busy time.

Oh, and if you can remember the moves of your game without a scoresheet, they'll think you're a GM! Laughing
