I never watched those movies
Doctor who and chess

they talk about it in this tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFC63BQ9FBE

I seem to remember that it wasn't a well-known game. You'd have thought SOMEONE on the staff of the show might have been clever enough to have the Doctor and Cyber-Doc play out The Immortal Game or something similiar as a nod to the chess geeks out there (who probably have a high overlapping circles in venn diagrams). But nope. Considering they had the kid say the lines "I play in my chess club at school" and then go on to lose to a fools mate in two moves, I think they (and I'm looking directly at you Neil) didn't give a shit about chess itself but only that it could be used as a plot device.

Actually that's the second time he plays chess in the new series. I haven't seen that episode because it's not on netflix yet, but in the latest one they have there's a very short clip of him playing against an alien guy.

bowties are cool...

In an episode of the Mentalist, the Mentalist approachs two chess players and tells the guy playing black, "your Grunfeld defense wasn't good enough for his Ruy Lopez." Huh?

Jelly Baby anyone? They're really quite good!
sitting back and watching the world end while eating jelly babys. oh, doctor who...

It is amazing how often the chessboard is setup wrong on tv shows and movies. More than 50% of the time the black square is on the bottom right.

Yup, I think I just saw in the show Endgame (about a chess master who solves crimes) that the board was represented at a 90 degree rotation. I thought e4 looked black in the show, but maybe the angle was such that I made a mistake. Also, for a chess master he doesn't do a lot of opening prep... Still a decent show
in one of the episodes of doctor who in season 7 (i think it's a nightmare in silver) the Doctor plays chess essentially against himself. Does anyone know that game?
