You don't need the browser extension - and you can't load your own wallpaper from there, anyway (at least on Firefox browser).
Go to the themes page: https://www.chess.com/settings/themes
Then select "Custom."
In the custom box, click "Background" and a dropdown box appears whose first listing is "Custom (Upload)"
Select "Custom (Upload)" and an "Upload" button appears - click it then choose a file from your computer.
IMPORTANT: it will not fit your picture to the page - if it's taller than wide for example and you're viewing on a 16x9 computer screen, it will may cut the top and bottom off.
The "Nature" background, one of those chess.com provides, is 1440x900 or 1.6 width to 1 high - I cropped my background to match that.

Thanks, it's changed since I last looked.
Just go on google and type in whatever kind of wallpaper you want. For example "English gardens HD wallpapers" and search. Make sure you add "HD wallpapers" to every search in order to get a great image. When the search is complete press "Images" on the search menu. You will have many images to choose from. Press on each image that you like and save it to your pictures file. Then go on Chess.com and press themes. When your on the themes page hit custom and then background. Scroll backgrounds until you find upload. Press upload and you will see all the images you downloaded earlier. Press on whatever image you like and Viola!
I hope this helps.
