Does Carlsen have a chance against Kramnik?

Now, I'm sure many of you currently following the Candidates' Tournament have the same question as I do, so I'm just going to ask it and give everyone a chance for discussion: if Kramnik manages to wrap this up and becomes the challenger, does Carlsen stand a chance against him? Can the young World Champion, in the face of by far the biggest threat to his uneasy reign he has thus far experienced, somehow find a way to slow down the Juggernaut, and prove that his apparent high opinion of himself is not unfounded? Or will the resurgent former World Champion continue his path of destruction and crush the pretender to his throne, making the latter a laughing stock of the chess world and vindicating the loyalty of the prophet MVL and kingmaker Giri?

But... Kramnik lost sad.png

Kramnik will almost certainly defeat him effortlessly, and in the unlikely case Carlsen managed to offer resistance the Russians have a wonderful opening novelty at their disposal: the Novichok Attack.

I swear... it was just to spite me. When I wrote the post he was completely winning.

Kramnik's score vs. Magnus is 27 - 35.  Just sayin'.

The only question about the World Championship is how badly will the challenger lose?

Carlsen vs Kramnik, classical games since 2017:

+0-1=1

Carlsen v Kramnik since 2010: +24 =28 -5. I think Carlsen has solved that problem quite well

Not sure where you found those stats tho...

Classical games: Magnus Carlsen beat Vladimir Kramnik 6 to 5, with 15 draws.
Including rapid/exhibition games: Magnus Carlsen beat Vladimir Kramnik 20 to 12, with 30 draws.
Only rapid/exhibition games: Magnus Carlsen beat Vladimir Kramnik 14 to 7, with 15 draws.

Ha, ha, hee, hee, ho, ho. ROFL.

Caruana was winning, then Kramnik had two passed pawns on the 7th rank, and completely winning, and then Kramnik crapped it away, losing not only the draw, but the game too when he blundered away his rook.

If Vlad won, it was probably going to be a Kramnik - Carlsen match, but now it's still wide open.

Whoever wins will be a decided underdog to King Magnus.

Not sure who would win, but Carlsen is pretty good. I’d say he’s at least one of the top 5 Norwegian players.

Kramnik on a good day, is the equal of Carlsen, on a bad day.

That sounds just like Vladimir!!!

AutisticCath

Carlsen could never beat Kramnik the Loser.

aglitatta

Are you guys serious, Magnus would destroy Big Vlad!

Stephen Hawing R.I.P. - 10 seconds silence when u read this - Vlad cannot take on the Norwegian and hope to win, Vlad the terrible must eventually fall.

I mean... Anand beat Kramnik, and Kramnik has floated in and out of the top 10. He's old, and has a chronic disease.

Carlsen beat Anand twice, and is young.

So... no, probably Kramnik would not be able to win against Carlsen. Not impossible though.

The candidates tournament is a little odd so far.....in that all the wins have come with black, check it out:
