Does Chess.com Cheat?

Whenever I play a certain opening Chess.com seems to select people that play the same opening (as white).

This does not appear to be a Random selection but a Calculated selection base on how I play my games. My chess rating is only part of their calculating methods of selecting people.

I feel like I am walking into a Casino that we all know is being manipulated.

If I begin a different opening over a period of time I bet you Chess.com is going to find people that play similar openings.

Yes I am bad, but have enough experience to see that there is a pattern happening in their selection process.

My guess is that you are right. But I dont think it's cheating. We have the option of choosing the rating range of people we want to be paired up with. Maybe you have done that, I dont know. But it's possible that people who are rated closely might tend to play the same types of openings, or the same type of chess in general. Which is why they have similar ratings. For example it's highly unlikely the openings you use are the same as the openings someone rated a thousand points higher would use.

Haha, funny.

Another new account. This warning also applies to you. I got a bunch of people banned like this. As long as you don't violate the TOS you're fine.

During each game it tells you at the top of the game board the type of opening each player is playing. This can be stored information that Chess.com may use to calibrate into playing others with similar openings. It’s not a complicated thing for a computer to do.

Why not? So if it is doing this, would it be considered cheating? Maybe not, but it does feel manipulated.

When we go to a live chess Tournament it is about your Chess Rating and nothing else

Yes but how does the house win here? What's in it for chess.com?

Hmm, good question. Another option is that they are manipulating us into improving our openings.

As silly theories go, at least this is an original one
