Personally, I get distracted by songs, but not by instrumental music (lately, I like Ludovico Einaudi during games on the net): with songs, I usually start singing along involuntarily when I'm alone and concentrated, and this tends to distract me.
Does listening to music while playing chess distract you?

Mozart is said to stimulate many parts of the brain simultaneously. Which is pretty damned amazing considering he's been dead for two and a half centuries.

Some scientits looked into the effects of listening to music while studying.
Like here for example:
http://www.mindthesciencegap.org/2012/10/08/does-music-help-you-study/
Interesting results of another study were as follows:
-Listening to music with lyrics while studying tends to decrease your efficiency
-Listening to music with lyrics you understand (spoken languages) tends to decrease it even more
-Listening to classical music tends to increase it
But this are average results and it's not true for everyone. I personally prefer a quiet environment to study and play chess. Sometimes I like to put classical music but may be it's just a placebo effect

try listening to this while playing bullet. It will make you move faster.

nope
While many turn to you for your opinion about all matter of phenomena and science, I, unfortuntely, do not, compelling as your rebuttal may be. However, having said that, you are certainly entitled to your opinion.
nope sorry it does not
I hope you don't expect to pounce on this thread like a troll and actually expect anyone to *believe* that Mozart didn't help the horse named Mr. Ed from the 60's TV comedy series become a GM in real life, when all around us, every day, another horse that listens to Mozart spontaneously becomes a GM.

There's nothing like some calm, relaxing dubstep to help focus the mind. I prefer knife party and skrillex.

I think it is mostly what you have become used to. If you play certain music while you play chess you will miss it. If you usually don't play music while you play, the silence will distract you.
true
On chess.com, I sometimes listen to music while I play. I haven't really looked into how I do when I'm listening to music as opposed to when I'm not, but I still want to know whether listening to music distracts you and your concentraion.
Is it different for every person, or are there any studies??
Thanks, Suvel
