I've joined the website about 7 months ago, at the same time as a friend of mine. We're both fairly new to chess.
We only play rapid, and are both rated in the 1250-1300 range. We played a few games against each other and we trade win/loss evenly. However, my friend is a higly competitive person and lately he's been boasting a lot about his tactic rating, which is a lot higher than mine. It's a staggering 2750, while mine is +/- 2000.
He's been playing a lot of problems (+3000), but I've been looking at the overall score of members who have 2700+ tactic rating and they're all, almost without exception, way higher rated in actual games than my friend. So it begs the question, is a 1400elo gap between rapid rating and puzzle rating possible, or is it more likely that my friend is getting a little help while solving these problems?
Yes, it's very possible to have a very large gap between tactics and game ratings. In tactics, you know there is something there and always get at least one point if you get it right, no matter how long it takes to solve.
