Doubles Chess?

Is there a chess variant game on line where two players play on each side of a standard on line chess board and play one move each alternatively without theoretically being allowed to communicate with your partner. What is the variant called if so....Smile

I don't know of one, and I play on this website everyday. What would be the point of having that?

Yeah, I think I heard it called tandem chess.

They've had fun tournaments (OTB) like this before with GM teams even. One time the two highest rated players were paired but they did poorly because no communication + clash of styles.

At the Stl Chess club after one of those super tournaments they had a  few fun after events with all the top GMs, and even Kasparov joined in. One of the events was this kind of chess... where the super GMs were paired with 1500 rated players haha.

Yes...........thanks for your thoughts all.. Unlike some sports like tennis where any of the doubles players can play a shot out of order I am thinking rather a sport like table tennis. SmileHere each player hits the ball in order.Smile For chess I was thinking that two players on a normal board not allowed communication but playing as a team would need to strategise the next move of his teammate. SmileAlternate moves where before the game they could discuss a strategy but it would not necessarily unfold that way and they would need to use a ""TEAM" like mindset "move by move" in tournament play. I have heard of the "two board" game but I am surprised that a much simpler one board "doubles" chess game doesn't exist....More so serious ,structured competition rather than just fun tournaments.I guess fun tournaments would promote the concept at the start. Singles table tennis evolved into a "singles" and "doubles"  game eventually I'm assuming and even "some card games" have this structure.......just curious ......but I'm assuming it  exists somewhere in the world......Smile

I found this version of tandem chess in a book through Google: https://books.google.com/books?id=IXHei4QYyfQC&pg=PA33&lpg=PA33&dq=tandem+chess&source=bl&ots=6JXSk92ctI&sig=ACfU3U39yUAk0rK6_PE2Veuur7LnIklrsA&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiR1aL3_tT7AhUrEkQIHeRbAQUQ6AF6BQiFAxAD#v=onepage&q=tandem%20chess&f=false

Basically, two players alternate moves and can't communicate during the game.

It's a popular way to play Go but I think it works better there because while a long game of chess is 40 moves, a long game of go is 100+ moves (Pair Go or Rengo https://senseis.xmp.net/?Rengo)

The game OP is asking for has been played from a long time ago. There is mention of it in record of very early chess tournaments (as a fun activity at break time).
