Doubling pawns on the c or f file?

It's quite common in chess games for players to be able to exchange minor pieces and force your opponent to double pawns, particularly on the c and f files.

However is this actually good or bad? Which would you prefer? The open file helps activate my rooks and the doubled pawn adds more pressure to the center.

Personally for me I happily take and double my pawns whenever I have the opportunity. At higher level chess games is this considered a good move?

Depends on the exact position, I'd say.

Yep. Don't double your pawns in front of your castled king.

It just leads to weaknesses, but in other places, it can be good.

If I double the pawns in front of my king, move my king to the corner and move my rook into the opened file, is that okay? I remember Kevin from the chess website recommended such a move in one of his videos.

Your question is too general. It depends on many other things like: Do you mean doubled *and isolated*, or just doubled? Is the king castled behind those doubled pawns? Are the queens on the board? Does one side get "queen slapped" as a result? In some openings like the Ruy Lopez (and I believe Benoni) the active piece play compensates for doubled pawns, so there is no automatic answer unless you are more specific.
