Edward Winter Does Not Exist?

i am edward winter. there is no photograph of myself but my likeness has
been sratched onto a wall outside of naples. buy a ticket to naples and go to no. 4 piasta, there by the green door you will find it. bring some tissue paper and a pencil and you can make a rubbing of it to take home.
I am sure he is a real person, he practically invented flame wars back in the 1980's when arguing with various chess luminaries in the pages of CHESS magazine and his own Chess Notes newsletter. He's known as 'The hermit of geneva' which tells you why you won't find his photo image anywhere.
What always intrigued me about him is that he is presumably English, yet has lived in Switzerland for many years and has the money to be able to purchase many rare chess artifacts from around the world. I assume he is a tax exile but how he came by his wealth is a complete mystery.

Thanks for the information, Vease. I appreciate it.
He sounds very odd and mysterious. I read about the verbal war with Larry Evans, but I am sure there is much more.
Now I picture him as a kind of Professor Moriarty.
"He's taken to the Continent, Watson, and I must pursue him there."

He was apparently a young man in his 20's when he started Chess Notes so how he came to be in Geneva and already accumulated a huge chess library is extremely mysterious.

This is all so fascinating. I just found the article about him by Hans Ree.

I tried and tried, but without luck... this must be the first publicist not wanting to attract too much attention!
Thanks for trying, Paul. I appreciate that very much.

There's hope for me yet
Dear Two Stone,
I'm getting a "Not Found" message at this URL.
Amy

Oh, I thought it was going to be a photo of Edward Winter.
Yeah, I've seen "Chess Notes," but for all I know they are written by our own Batgirl, using "Edward Winter" as her nom de guerre.

His magazine appeared to be self-financed and most certainly lost a fair amount of money. This indicates that even at the time he had independent means.
The most likely explanation is that "Edward Winter" is a pseudonym for a wealthy Brit of roughly master strength who devoted his love of chess to its esoterica and ensuring the historical record is accurate. He greatly values his privacy. This could mean his wealth and name are well known, but not necessarily.
But there is no actual evidence he even lives in Switzerland, although he may. Just because mail is delivered to an address doesn't mean the addressee actual lives there.
No matter who he is, he has performed a great service for us and for chess in authenticating its history and debunking its myths.
Your grammar and punctuation are as precise as Winter's. Not to mention you both indicate an em dash by a hyphen proceeded and followed by a word space.
Your current address doesn't happen to be Geneva by any chance?

ROFLMAO!
Believe it or not, within the last two weeks I've been suspected of being GM Larry Evans, too, so I've got both sides of the feud covered!
Bwahaha. Yes, I heard the rumor that you had faked your own death.

It might be of interest to view his player page on chessgames.com and read the commentary on that page and on the pages of his two games. Hans Ree, however, is dead wrong that Winter is error-free. He's very careful and tedious but far from perfect.

Thanks, batgirl, that made interesting reading. I hope that was really Keene. Seemed like it.
History is a tricky business.
On a related note, I hear that Murray's A History of Chess is soon to be reprinted in a facsimile edition. It is available for preorder on amazon.

"Tedious" is the best term ever to describe Winter :)
He may be brilliant, but reading him reminds me of everything I hated about high school history classes. It's everything that good history isn't.

GM Keene thinks he knows who he is. I don't think Edward Winter is a chess master and probably has not played in a chess tournament in many, many years. He does make mistakes and typos as well (I have found several errors in his books), but does pounce on anyone else who does (I know. He has pounced on me for years). He just doesn't do it in a friendly way and he rarely says anything positive about anyone. I have also read that Winter, or his works, are researched and written by more than one person. He must have one of the best chess libraries or access to the major chess libraries in Europe.
