Nobody ever won a game by resigning. However, your opponent could mess up and save you half a point, or a whole one.
one word:
Stalemate
of course of course....BUT if your gonna play all these moves and see it to the end...why not see it to the end? Make that last move and pray that I stalemate you instead of checkmating ;)...I just think it's BS to string someone along for a lot of moves and then resign right before the last move

I can only imagine that they do it first to see if you'll make a catastrophic mistake somewhere along the way. Failing that, they then probably give up because they are under the impression that refusing to let you checkmate them will get under your skin in some way.
An absurd premise on the face of it. Since your win counts the same whether they get checkmated, drop the flag of resignation, or run out of time.
Yet here you are. So I guess they eked out a win of a sort after all.
maybe they should focus more on the tactics than the mind games unless thats the game they wanna win haha
If the game is so obviously lost...then why complain? The point is that the game is not lost until one party is checkmated or one party resigns...There is a great difference playing a titled player and an average player...the difference is the number and quality of errors.

Quality of errors. Interesting concept.........
Just got on board !!
Struggle to see how a vastly superior position can be lost on time when a smart weak player can time you out rather then resign !!
Yes rooperi, "Quality of errors"
If the objective is to find the best move in any given position, then any thing but, is an error. There may be 20 possible moves (other than the best move)...all of which puts one in a totally different endgame (or alternative futures)...of course each move can be qualified, as to being better or worst. The Titled Player will most often find the best move, the average player most often will make an error (play a poor move)...

It is exceedingly rare to miss a mate in 1, even in 1 minute games.
Kramnik?
Yup. Happens to the best of us. And also to me.
Nothing in the world is worse than breaking out Rybka after a game and seeing...

INSULTS !! Be careful CHESS.com staff plays a wicked ENDGAME !! To the OP try and stay focused on the TOPIC !!
I seen a lot of players who play midgame real well but they can't do checkmates, I get better at tricking people into stalemates as well as learn how to do proper checkmates to avoid stalemates by playing to the very last move
stalemates, disconnects, timeouts, threefold repetition, or the dreaded 50 move rule. before you spout sportsmanship nonsense it's also possible (especially when flags are about to fall) he doesn't see it coming, or he sees a refutation you missed.
read and understand the rules before you even consider starting another ridiculous resign thread.
you're missing the point homeslice. Im not complaining about people not resigning, I get that. It's when people hold off resigning until one move before forced checkmate. Why not either finish the game and make the last move? (or resign earlier). How about you read the original comment thoroughly before witing a thread off as "just another resign thread"

So, what's the point of playing an obviously lost position until the very last move before checkmate...and then resigning? This has happened to me so many times recently (in live chess) that I'm guessing at least one person who did this to me will read this...So tell me, what's up? What's the big game?
