Even in the 93rd percentile, people blunder like dummies.

So my thread is about what the title reads, but I have second, more important question: What is the significance of being in the 93rd percentile if your rating is only 1700. Top players are rated nearly double that. Does a 93rd percentile position mean you are 93% as good as Carlsen? Opinions please.. Thanks.

93rd percentile means you are one of the tallest pygmies in the village.

It does not mean that you are a giant.

Don’t let it go to your head - The percentage stat is a joke, it’s based upon ALL chess.com accounts that have ever been created - the vast majority of which have been abandon. My son who had just learned the basics created and account and instantly in the top 40%. With a 900-1000 elo.

Even GM's can blunder like dummies, whats your point. 93rd percentile means top 7pct of players, not that you are 93 pct as good as Carlsen. The skill required to jump from x percentile to y percentile can vary wildly, its not a linear progression. That's why its common for chess players to hit plateaus.

This percentile thing makes as much sense as 1100 players posting how their CAPs score is 99, and then ask if they are a GM?

We dont blunder because we are "dummies".  WE blunder because we are human.
