Kamsky: ‘People are mistaken when they say I quit chess’

Much thanks for pointing out this excellent article.  Fabulous.  Absolutely could've been a world champion.  Regardless, a great career.

I didn't even know he left the US.

Great article, thanks. I feel sorry about Kamsky. Support is really essential to get World Champion. On the other hand he didn’t have an easy life with his father.
Amazing that he missed Bxf7, as this is a very simple tactical blow, even for me! This is the kind of tactics that a player of his level will probably find 1 000 times in 1 000 games. Very sad!

Let's be honest - he did quit chess. When you are relatively young and playing at the elite level, nearly challenging for the world championship, and decide to voluntarily abandon all that to pursue a college education, you are basically making a "Plan B" for yourself that gives you a backup just in case you don't earn a satisfactory income from chess. Once he got a degree and started working in his academic field, he kissed his dreams of ever reaching the top goodbye. At that point, even after choosing to return to professional chess after 10 years of being away from it, he could never attain the glory he had formerly achieved.

I know this is late, but it is sad when Kamsky blames his father for making him (lose at chess).

No other chess player blames or gives credit to father.
