I have just begun to read actual chess books and I see the (!) symbol at the end of a move i.e. Qxd4! I can glean that the move was significant in some way, but what I don't know is what the actual "textbook" meaning of the symbol used is in this context. Any ideas for me?

It means a excellent or good move

set up a chess board, play out the moves... after a few games, it will sink in. chess annotation has meaning. the ! means good move! the ? means questionable move, just for starters. expand from there... I used to play out tournament games from logs, sometimes I couldn't see why the games were called a draw. study, play lots, read good teaching books like Jeremy silman's "how to reassess your chess" 3rd edition, or "chess tactics for advanced players" by yuri averbahk. what the hey, right?

so after all those books you get a 1400 Rapid Rating? is that what we should expect?
