Falkbeer counter-gambit doesn't count as chess.

I haven't had the luck of running into the King's Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.f4) often, but until now, I've been playing the Falkbeer counter gambit (2...d5) as a response.

Finally, someone makes the famous(?) blunder of taking with the f pawn (3.fxe5) and finds himself with a shocking check from the queen (3...Qh4+) that will soon cost him material or worse.

My opponent realised his error and resigned.. but the game did not count for chess.com ratings because "Unfortunately games are not rated until white has made its 4th move."

Does the Falkbeer gambit not count as chess? What do you think?

I might also argue that six days doesn't make a war, but I'd be wrong on both counts.

jamesh, i would agree with you that in this instance you were cheated of the rating points you deserved... that being said, the issue with this game was not the opening itself, but the fact that the opening trap your opponent fell for lasted only a few moves.

this is sort of a flaw in the way that chess.com handles its rating system, and yet i am in favor of it because there have been times when a couple of moves into a game i remember about some pressing matter i have to attend to and i am thankful i wont be penalized for it.

in this case, your right, but overall this rule isnt worth changing in any drastic way. cheers!

on a side note, love the falkbeer. its quite an exciting opening

it can only be assumed that your opponent was somewhere around your rating or better, because they resigned so quickly.to view that as respect for your game is some satisfaction....5-10 not lost points? not a big deal dude...get out there and play(i only recently overcame a 1400-1500 plateau myself)

If that is really a Rule of Chess.com (up to 4th move or it doesn't count for rating), it's a piece of nonsense. ALL games count in chess. Full stop. Period.

Personally, I feel that unless you pressed the abort button, the game should count no matter what happens (maybe with the exception of a chess.com temporary maintenance routine).

jamesh, the falkbeer is a aggresive weapon and we cant say that it is a bad counter gambit because there have been numerous players playing this counter gambit such as tartakower, reubenstein.if i say so it isint a bad gambit at all!

Yeah, you was robbed.

I run into the occassional player that resigns after my first pawn move. Seem to have some people that only know one opening and refuse to play unless you also use it.

The win is well deserved, you should have received your points.

Both players can abort the game before white makes his 2nd move. This would have seemed, at least in my delirious mind, as the only chance to end the game without ratings (win/lose/draw) being activated.. I was quite surprised to learn that white's 4th move is now the undeclared abort button - even if you click resign!
