Favorite Films Featuring Chess?

Over the years, I have always found it enjoyable to see films use chess or be based on chess. I admit, there are times were chess is used in film that has thrown me OUT of the movie for an impossibly inaccurate position (like the board is set up with a hanging queen...).

What are some of your favorite chess movies or movies involving chess?

OK I'll admit that the premise of a middle aged Corsican housekeeper discovering chess and just happening to have a client (Kevin Kline) who is an expert to teach her who goes on to win the island championship might be just a little farfetched, but hey it's the movies, right?   Still if you don't find yourself rooting for her in the championship game against the mean old chess club president who dismissed her as a chess player but tried to hire her as a housecleaner, well, I don't know what to say.  Did I mention it was in French?

“the dark horse” was pretty good

The Dark Horse for sure!

Brooklyn Castle is definitely my all-time favorite. It's really cool to me how it follows the story of a real high school in Brooklyn. And there are some really strong players who went on to become FMs who are in the cast.

In that trailer for The Dark Knight I thought it was funny how he was giving a rousing speech to the kids about winning the national championship in 6 weeks and he got no response from them. He was so excited and tried to get them excited but they just looked at him like he was telling them they get to eat nothing but asparagus for the next 6 weeks.

what about Searching for Bobby Fischer? (my favorite)

Most over-rated chess movie of all time.  In the final tournament game, the kid offers his opponent a draw... despite having a winning position, in order to be nice.?.    But the mean kid refuses the draw and goes on to lose to the most obvious tactic in the world.

I despise that movie.

Most obvious tactic in the world? Clearly someone knows nothing about chess. That tactic was 2200+

He doesn't offer a draw in a winning position. He offers a Draw in a DRAWN position. Get your facts straight

Also about Searching For Bobby Fischer, it's supposed to be based on a true story but the final game has Josh winning. In real life the game was drawn & I think they were co champions.

Also, his opponent in that game was a much better story for a movie. He was a better player than Josh but a year & a half younger. He was homeless & had to move around a lot. He & his sister won world junior titles with this crazy childhood going on. I think Josh was the one with the coach, training, all the benefits of a good family & still the other kid was a stronger player.  It's an amazing story. He went on to do well in real estate & poker. The movie was made about the wrong kid.

Perhaps not really a movie about chess but "The Seventh Seal" is a favorite of mine! A knight returning from the crusades during the time of the black plague plays a game of chess with death for his life.

That scene where death is playing a chess game looks like the game is turned sideways, a full 90 degrees.

When was the last time you saw that garbage movie?  It's been 20 years for me, but I remember the final move.... promotes to a queen - creating check on the long diagonal.  2200+ level chess?   Perhaps for Australians.

Well, if I remember correctly, he saw that 16 moves beforehand, and the sequence also included some sacrifices.

I honestly don't get why Searching for Bobby Fischer is so hated. There's more to the movie than just that one simple scene.

Human nature, and the internet.

People will disagree just for the sake of disagreeing.

Its a fun movie.

i grew up playing jr tennis and the parallels in “searching for bobby fischer” were what attracted me to the movie

i loved the part where the tournament director/arbiter/organizer locks all the parents in the locker rooms
