I like playing on online - i used to play a lot a nabiscoworld.com - I liked the 3d set, but I have since become used to chess.com due to the fact that all other game sites are blocked at my job :-)

I don't usually like playing against the computer, but I may buy a program to improve upon my game.

I perfer the ones that the heads don't fall off or isn't missing any pieces

I love my Deluxe Wooden Chess Set.  It's pieces are durable and picturesque, and it fairly viable for transport.  My favorite Chess Program would have to be Chessmaster 10th Edition for its tutorials and database, and Crafty for the simple fact that it is a wonderful sparring partner for Lightning Chess.

The kind where you can't tell the pieces apart without a key, and usually they're made of glass and highly transparent

When I play chessmaster I usually use Irish glass, I love how they look. Anyone know  where to find a real set with that design?

Here's another set I wouldn't mind having, too bad there's only one in the world

Can't remember the site I found it on. It's from late 18th century I think. Really pretty set.
Metris

Neneko, you can get the isle of lewis set at http://www.chessbaron.co.uk/chess-TH2001.htm and probably lots of other places for a lot cheaper.

As for my own favourite chess set, I have to go for the set of glass I have for IRL sets and the asian themed chess set on chessmaster 8000 (I think it was the 8000 version... Might have been the 7000 version, though) It was really pretty. Shame I can't find CM8K anywhere now...

A great gary kasparov set retails for about au$150 which i purchased recently, includes a very detailed knight and larger rooks which mr kasparov was keen to design to reflect their greater piece value, worth checking out.

For playing, of course it has to be a staunton set.  The set I really want and will probably get next is House of Stanton's recreation of the set used in the Fischer-Spassky match in the 1972 World Championship match:

But for display sets, I really like medievel themed sets.  I know chess came from India before the middle ages, but I really like the romanticism of pieces that are actual kings, queens, bishops, knights, castles and pawns.  I have a great ceramic set that I bought off of Ebay years ago that I usually keep displayed in my living room.  The King is about six inches tall and the pawns are about three.  The black pieces are a high gloss black and the white are a very light blue.  It's a beautiful set.

I saw an ad in a magazine for that set, but haven't been able  to find it online.  Anybody else know where I might find it?
