Delivering checkmate with a pawn

There's something particularly satisfying in delivering checkmate with a pawn, don't you think? When it happened to me the other day I realized it was the first time in a long while since I'd won a game like this. It led me to wonder just how common (or rare) it is to deliver mate with a pawn. Does anyone have any statistics on the frequency of delivering checkmate with each of the different pieces?

Such statistics would be hard to get since most decisive master games end in resignation rather than checkmate. Also, often there are alternative ways to get mated at the time they resign. It's an interesting topic, though.

Here's a slightly faster pawn mate by me playing with the black pieces...

+ 1 to this.

Another satisfying aspect of the game is when you mate your opponent one move before they had a forced mate on you...and they didn't see your mate coming Cool

Yes! So satisfying! Got any good examples?

Yeah, had one in a blitz game quite a while back (might have been 5min time control) but would take a bit of effort to dig it up.

I was really down on material too, basically had a Queen v Queen, Rooks and Pawns. They got too consumed in the mate they were giving and forgot about their own king, I managed to deliver a back rank mate just before they mated me.

If that happended to me I would have been livid.

Love Pawn Mates, good stuff !

In terms of mating someone when they had mate on next move...

Just played this bullet, I was in complete control but if I made some serious blunder by not delivering mate he had mate on the next move. I mated him first, rook sacrifice to remove the knight protecting the mating square for my queen, then Boomtown.

This data is easy to compile. I've compiled it, but misplaced the scrap of paper on which I wrote what I found.

Give me three minutes. I'll reproduce it.
I started by creating a database of games ending in checkmate. Now I search this database for checkmate when a pawn moves (understand that the results will contain games involving pawn promotion, so the number will be inflated).
Pawn 4847

Then repeat with each piece.
King 25

Knight 10,990

Bishop 8,898

Rook 20,010

Queen 50,594

Convert these numbers to percentages if you like.
