feel like im not gaining any rating for wins

Ive been playing a lot of rapid games(working my way up to play more blitz cuz i usually lose on time) and Im winning quite a bit but my rating is going up superrrr slow and if i lose i lose a lot of points. So it feels really inaccurate and hard to climb rating. I guess im asking is this normal? My rating in daily goes up over 100 for each win, blitz like around 30, but i get like +7 for a win in rapid, and i understand it makes a difference if im at 600 their at 400 whatever, it just feels off and im wondering if anyone has some insight

edit: If the math stays the same i would have to WIN over a thousand games to get to about 1400~ which is where i feel my skill level might be at idk its irrelevant but still how does this make sense

This is possibly because you have not played sufficient Daily and Blitz games relative to the number of Rapid games you have played (I have not checked your game statistics for this yet).

When you first started out in Rapid, a similar scenario occurs. Do note that the rating fluctuations apply per individual time control, so your frequent playing in Rapid will be considered to be "independent" of your non-frequent playing in Blitz or Daily, so in this case you would be considered "new" to Blitz or to Daily.

The more OFTEN you play, the fewer points each game is worth.

If you only finish one or two Daily games per month, then each one will be worth a lot of points.

If you finish three or four Rapid games each day then each game will only be worth a few points.

Ahhh thank you guys that makes a lot of sense. So if I understand correctly if I play more blitz and bullet or other time controls it will help me get more rating on rapid? Seems like a good way to keep people balanced

Hey there! I just went through your profile and I can see that you have joined the site very recently. Just to give you an idea about ratings, when you start playing for the first time you will gain lots of rating points for initial wins. After you play enough games, when you reach your actual strength, your rating gets saturated and the rating points you gain for your win also slows down.

In your case, you have played enough rapid games for that to happen. That's why you gain points depending upon your opponent's rating. Meanwhile, you haven't played enough blitz and bullet games . That's why you are still gaining lots of rating points now for your wins . This will also slow down gradually as you progress. I hope you got your answer. Have a great day!

Not quite.

It works like this:

Each rating format (Blitz, Bullet, Daily, Rapid) is independant. They have no effect on each other.

The number of rating points that you gain or lose in a chess game depends ONLY on these things:

1) Whether you won, lost, or drew.

2) Your own rating compared to your opponent's rating. You gain more points by beating better players. You lose more points if you lose to weaker players.

3) How many games you've recently played using THAT particular format (Blitz, Rapid, etc).

The idea behind point #3 is that if you have already played several Rapid-format games in the past week, then your current rating is probably fairly accurate and only small adjustments up or down are needed to track your progress in playing strength.

But if (on the other hand) you haven't played any games on this site for the past three or four months, then your months-old rating is probably not accurate anymore and a large adjustment up or down is probably going to be needed.

So if you've been playing lots of Rapid lately you might only get seven or eight points per win. But if you haven't played recently... I once stopped playing on Chess.com for two years, and when I started again my first game after coming back earned me +108 points.

Jenium

You also gain more points for beating stronger players. So if you are 300 and beat a 1000 player, you will get way more points than for beating a 200 player.

How do i play people at higher rating? im at 600 in rapid rn and i feel like that is not my skill level at all im like 18-2 in my last 20 games at that rating. But i dont see a way to climb aside from spamming games

Why is my rapid rating only going up by 6 every time?

Read my post above.

If you are playing on the website (instead of on the mobile app) you can adjust your Seek +/- parameter, so that your seeks will search for opponents in the desired range (say: +200 to -50).

Of course, your rating might be outside THEIR seek parameters.

I haven't been getting much rating for my wins.

We're talking +1 status.

Check the picture I posted above. +108 points in one game.

That game deserved it, though. My Magnum Opus.

so there is no way to make your rating increase in higher amounts besides either grinding or not playing for months?

Play stronger opponents.

Beating a player 50 points "stronger" than you gives you VASTLY more rating points than beating some pooch rated 50 points below you.

Adjust your Seek parameters.

because currently my rating is going up by 6 or 8 against guys 50 points above me

The more games you play in a month, the smaller the rating increments get.

It's SUPPOSED to work that way, because if you are playing lots of games, then your rating is assumed to be fairly accurate... so large adjustments are not required.

But its only the third day of the new month

It isn't divided by months. What did you picture? Getting lots of rating points on the 1st, then less rating points every day?

Think of it as a rolling average. The algorithm just checks how many games you've played recently. What does it care about calendars?

That explanation is no good. It doesn't award him more points.

No good for his purposes, sure.

I think he's looking for an exploit in the rating formula. As far as I know, he won't find one.

blueemu

Sure, I'll take the hit. I probably deserve it after posting that +108 picture.

Crucify me!

Recently, I get zero points when I win, and lose a whole bunch of points when I lose. That seems hardly fair. Maybe someone can explain it to me (?) I also am not allowed to challenge a player that is only 40 points ahead of me, even though I had won against them once. Don’t understand chess.com ‘rules’.

Your last three daily wins were unrated games.

My rating when i play a bot is always 400 even when none of my ratings are 400 tho
