I don't know if there is a similar distinction in English. It can be that some German speaking people use the word figures in English - probably I do it too -, but this is not correct, AFAIK.

How do you call the things you move on the chess board? Are they chess pieces or chess figures?
I had a discussion with one of my American friends, who is no chess player, so it was like native speaker vs chess player
Anyways, how do you call it?
