No I think they are serious, I just don't know the context of them.  For example, I don't think he means to NEVER check the king, because there are situations, such as tactics where you have to check the king.  So I would like to know under what situations does he mean to never check.

I am only beginning to learn chess but like these comments. One thing I seem to percieve is the strategic importance of your opponenents pawn play can be a real asset for you if you use them to your advantage.
