Like most of us here, I learned the smothered mate early on in my chess studies. I've seen it in practice many times in puzzles and in the chess.com's tactics trainer. Unfortunately, until today, It's never actually came up in a game for me. I've tried many times to shoot for it but my opponents either see it and defend or the game goes in another direction. I have of course performed smothered mates, but never one of those...double check...queen sac... (Probably has a name) smothered mates.
Anyway, while playing at another site I sometimes play at, my eyes lit up when I saw the possibility in a game today. My queen was sitting pretty on b3; my opponent's king was on h8 with pawns on h7 and g7 but not on f7.
I played Ng5. My opponent missed the threat and attacked my queen. I played Nf7, which forced king g8, I double checked with Nh6, king was forced back to h8 and then I sacked my queen on g8. Rook takes was forced.
Ok, so I’m all excited to deliver the mate and I played Nf7#
…only I didn’t play knight f7 because I slipped and put my knight on f5 instead. Oh man that hurt. That really, really hurt. I had to resign.
Mouse slips, or in this case a thumb slip, suck the big one.
