I know it is not traditional chess, but it is more challenging. Give it a try, but more importantly have fun....I think there are to many "cut-throat" players. It's a game! Relax, enjoy it.

After its inventer Bobby Fischer and after the fact that the pieces on the back file are with few rules randomly scattered. The reason it is called 960 chess is because you are able to make exactly 960 differant starting positions on the board.
Bobby Fischer invented 960 chess because he believed chess was becoming a formula, in other words he believed the chess stratigy was being melted down to where whichever player had memorized the most games or chess theory would ultimately win any standerd chess match. His 960 chess completely demolishes all opening and middlegame theory! each starting position requires far more thought than the original chess and between the chess clock and the brain wracking this chess varient is super exciting! There is no pre-concieved ideas on how you should move that first piece, there is no security from the first move, most of the play is pure inspiration!

Fischer Random Chess is where the back rank pieces (ie. not Pawns) are placed  on squares randomly.

In Fischer Random Chess the king is always between the two rooks and you always have a bishop on a white square and a bishop on a black square. When you castle in Fischer Random Chess your king and rook always end up in the same position as when you castle in Standard chess.

Two places where you can play Chess960 by email are http://www.chessos.com and http://www.schemingmind.com Schemingmind has a game limit of 20 games for standard members but you can play more than 20 by entering a tournment. If for example you are playing 18 games and enter a tournament that gives you 8 more games then you are playing 26 games.

I'm really enjoying it.

You're using everything you know about chess, but that heavy burden of opening theory is gone!

What a brilliant solution by Bobby.
